Robert Scholz, Thomas Slavin Honored at 2014 Foundry Executive Conference for Contributions to Metalcasting
The 2014 Foundry Execu-
tive Conference was held Sept. 12-14 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of the 2014 Keating Founders Freedom Award for significant contribu- tions to the metalcasting industry and active participation in the fields of government affairs, hu- man resource management, safety and health, or education. For the first time the award was bestowed upon two people, Robert Scholz, Senior Project Manager, TRC Environmental, Brookfield, Wis., and Thomas Slavin, President, Slavin OSH Group LLC, Chi- cago. Both were awarded for their vital roles in the OSHA Proposed Silica Standard comments and testimony during the past year.

Approved Research Project to Assess Sand Binder Emissions Te AFS 4F, 4K and 10E Committees have approved
research on sand binder emissions to develop a low cost emission protocol to assess HAP and VOC release into the workplace environment. Significant findings from past research have identified mold atmosphere, heating rate and isothermal heating as major factors in emission generation. Te new project will add support to several research areas
Research Project Approved for Reclamation of Investment Casting Shell Materials
Dr. Victor Okhuysen and the AFS 4L Investment Casting Research Committee are poised to move forward with research to find economical ways to reclaim casting shell materials. A recent survey of investment casters con- ducted by AFS found that 89% of respondents indicated interest in reclaiming ceramics. Te project aims to produce a set of instructions and guidelines on how to approach the reclamation of ceramic shell materials. Results from the project will be published at the earliest opportunity through AFS. Te project will move forward in the next few months.

Future Leaders of Metalcasting Meeting Held in Cedar Falls, Iowa
On Oct. 14-15 at the University of Northern Iowa
(UNI), the Future Leaders of Metalcasting gathered for their annual fall meeting. This meeting featured a presentation on additive
manufacturing by Jerry Thiel, UNI, and a roundtable discussion on North American metalcaster profitability strategies led by Christof Heisser of Magma Foundry Technologies. The program also included a tour of the John Deere
Waterloo Foundry, a tour of the UNI Metalcasting Cen- ter, and a foundry in a box demonstration at Waterloo’s East High School.
