EDITOR’S

NOTE By Jennifer Younker

Welcome 2017! As a new year begins, it’s time to think about the future. According to the University of Scranton (Pa.), about 8 percent of people who make New Year’s resolutions actually keep them. Last year, I was part of that 8 percent and kept to my resolution to start walking. It was hard and I failed some weeks, but I pushed, prayed and forgave myself and have fi nished two 5Ks and am preparing for my fi rst 10K in February.

As I read “Our New Year’s reformations” (page 14), I realized my success was beyond a resolution. It was a reformation. Resolutions are about something bigger, something more than losing weight or saving money. Reshaping our resolutions into reformations with insights from Martin Luther’s Small Catechism creates an opportunity to experience a new freedom and God’s mercy through outward refl ection and acknowledgement of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

Through outward refl ection and service to others, “Inside the walls: Faith unchained” (page 24), explores a four-day ecumenical Christian program off ered at the North Central Correctional Facility in Iowa that has brought inmates and volunteers together for more than 15 years. “Holistic healing” (page 34), looks at how ELCA parish nurses are being called to promote wholeness and wellness in congregations.

Finally, a new year off ers opportunities for Living Lutheran to continue to grow and explore how we tell stories of the ELCA. As part of the magazine’s observation of the Reformation, this month starts the fi rst of a 10-part print and web topical count- down series, “50 Reformation quotes” (page 30), and a three-part series, “The Campaign for the ELCA: What you need to know” (page 22).

Thank you for your continued readership and wishing you all a blessed 2017.

We would love to hear from you. Contact us at LivingLutheran@elca.org.
