In Padhar’s kitchen, women receive nutrition, sanitation and food preparation training and are introduced to smokeless cookstoves, which use little energy and run on sustainable biomass pellets. Inset: The hospital kitchen serves as the demonstration and education site for women in the nearby villages.

When Kanchan and her son, Hritik (last names withheld), were admitted to the center, he was severely malnour- ished. During the 14 days he and his mother stayed there, Kanchan learned about sanitation and nutrition and a diet that would help Hritik remain healthy.

“His life was saved because we came here,” Kanchan said. “I am happy that I came to Padhar Hospital, and I learned so much [information] that I will take home with me.”

Biomass pellets produce significantly less smoke than traditional stoves and are made from husks and chaffs that would otherwise be discarded.
