Ministry GO SOCIAL

How often have you been running errands and thought, “If only I had my copy of Martin Luther’s Small Catechism with me!” That hasn’t happened to you? That’s OK, you’ll still find many benefits to the new “Luther’s Small Catechism” app put out by Augsburg Fortress.

Whether for confirmation class, youth group or an adult faith formation class, everyone can now have their own copy of the Small Catechism as they study together. And here comes the best part: It’s free!

The basic version of the app comes with the central sections of the Small Catechism: Luther’s explanations of the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, and the sacraments of baptism and the altar. It also includes Luther’s “How to Confess," “Morning and Evening Blessings” and “Blessings at Meals.”

The text of the Small Catechism comes from Timothy Wengert’s translation in the 2000 edition of The Book of Concord (Fortress Press). The app also allows you to switch between English and Spanish translations.

Those looking for a little bit more may upgrade (for $1.99) to the study version. This unlocks an introduc- tion to the catechism written by Wengert, Luther’s 1529 introduction to the Small Catechism, his “Chart of Bible Passages,” and the services of marriage and baptism. There are also some explanatory notes provided within the rest of the catechism. (Note: The study version appears to be in English only.)

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED Reformation 500 Sourcebook: Anniversary Resources for Congregations

Publishers are producing a wide range of resources to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The Reformation 500 Sourcebook (Augsburg Fortress, 2016) for congregations is a great place to start. Rostered and lay leaders will find a multitude of resources, including planning for special worship, educational opportunities, service and mission. Included is a CD-ROM that offers many additional tools to use. Your best first stop in planning your Reformation observance.

If you need guidance in selecting additional Reformation books, websites, studies, videos or curriculum, contact an ELCA Resource Center and/or the person(s) designated in your synod to curate sound theological resources.

Review I’ll be honest: I didn’t know how much I wanted a usable copy of the Small Catechism on my phone until I downloaded this app. From a practical standpoint, the text is very readable and it’s easy to navigate between different sections. The search bar is easy to find at the top of every page.

In the month I’ve had this app, it has allowed me to quickly reference the catechism while writing sermons and devotions away from my desk, which has been extremely helpful. I will also recommend this app in our Bible studies and for our confirmation families.

Download it now (Apple Store and Google Play) and give it a try on your device.
