Opportunity cost? 4 Leader: Tim Gillett Paying the price?
News that the Wellcome Trust – the world’s largest medical research charity – is to launch a new
open-access publishing platform, has been described as ‘just the beginning’ by F1000’s Vitek Tracz.
Indeed, a complete switch to open access publishing seems likely if not inevitable – but the industry continues to wrestle with the issue of how to turn a profit from such a model. On page 4, Rebecca Pool talks to key scholarly publishing players in an effort to get to the bottom of the conundrum. It’s just a few weeks since the UK voted in a referendum to leave the European Union – and already the research world is beginning to feel the effects. While the repercussions of ‘Brexit’ are difficult to predict at this early stage, the fallout seems likely to be widespread; on pages 8 and 9 two respected industry figures suggest that there will be negative effects if the UK does indeed invoke Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty – but also that there could be some reasons to be cheerful. We have our usual excellent selection of contributed opinion pieces on a wide range of topical subjects including semantic analysis, mentorship, and data analysis; as well as previews of several industry events due to take place in coming months. We look forward to seeing what the remainder of 2016 holds for us all! @researchinfo
