PLUS ÇA CHANGE...
Te more observant of you will have already noticed that this column is not written by Dr Tom Wilkie, who has this month retired aſter many years at the helm of Scientific Computing World. 'Dr Tom', as he is affectionately known at
the Europa Science offices in Cambridge, is a truly difficult act to follow – he has led this magazine from the front, and has long been a familiar face at industry events. Readers have not seen the last of him, however, as he will continue to write for this publication on a casual basis and will no doubt still occasionally be spotted in conference halls around the world! I make no claim to have the experience
or expertise of Dr Tom, but am looking forward very much to learning more about the scientific computing industry. In the same week that the airline industry

celebrates the best aircraſt interiors with the Crystal Cabin Awards, Gemma Church investigates how simulation soſtware can optimise the passenger experience in the aircraſt cabin while balancing stringent safety, cost, and environmental considerations. Elsewhere in the magazine Robert Roe looks

at how interconnect technology is helping to change the landscape of high-performance computing, while Bruno Silva argues that new cloud technologies are likely to help make the cloud even more important to scientific computing. In our laboratory informatics section, Sophia Ktori looks at the steps taken by companies to protect patient data. While, inevitably, there will be differences in
the magazine following Dr Tom's retirement, I will do my very best to maintain the quality and reputation he has built. I look forward to meeting many of you soon!
