Feature Digital signal processors meet Moore’s law

Silicon technology has powered rapid advances in coherent optical communication, but now silicon’s progress is set to slow. Andy Extance reports

Feature The tipping point for silicon photonics

Has silicon photonics passed a critical threshold after which the technology’s spread and influence become pervasive? Roy Rubenstein investigates

Feature Internet of everything

In less than a decade, everything could be connected to the Internet of Things. How will this impact optical transport vendors, asks Rebecca Pool

Foreword Nice one!

N

ice will say ‘bienvenue’ to the optical industry in June, when optical executives gather on the French

Riviera for the 18th edition of the Next Generation Optical Networking conference. From expert presentations to drinks on the sunny terrace, the event remains one of the highlights on the optical networking calendar for me personally. As the saying goes, it’s a tough gig, but someone’s got to do it! I have no doubt that some of the hot topics

featured in this issue will be extensively discussed in Nice. For instance, on page 14 Roy Rubenstein puts pen to paper to tell us about the state of the silicon photonics market. Te article summarises interviews he has carried out with industry luminaries who have shaped this technology space. More detailed discussions with these key industry figures are also available on his website gazettabyte.com. On page 18 of this issue, Rebecca Pool

surveys optical systems vendors’ attitudes to the Internet of Tings. It’s a hot topic for sure – one that is oſten quoted as a significant bandwidth driver of the future – but will it really change the way that optical vendors do business? Turn to the feature to find out. Our third feature by Andy Extance takes a

look at the future of digital signal processing in coherent optical communications, which is advancing at a rapid pace on page 14. He takes a look at recent developments before asking, what will happen now that the future of optical transmission is so closely intertwined with progress in electronics. Back in Nice, there will be an exhibition
