As we now know, the sector grew by £2bn over the year (2014-2015) taking the turnover to £30bn overall (excluding residential). During that period, teaching income had risen by 6% and income from research increased by 12% – but there were also good examples of universities securing commercial deals that increased their income per sqm.
The University of Hertfordshire cemented deals with businesses such as Ocado and Regus for office space, as well as commercial leases with the bank Santander and the NHS which runs a GP clinic on campus, helping to grow its income to £1,477 per sqm.
Elsewhere in the sector, the University of Sheffield built workshops, laboratories and office space in a business park near to the M1. According to AUDE, the capital expenditure in the Sheffield Business Park will deliver 4,000 jobs and generate over £210m per annum to the regional economy when fully developed.

Securing alternative funding streams outside of traditional routes is becoming be a key area of focus for estate directors, alongside the need to drive efficiency, reduce costs and raise service levels. Developments that promote greater community involvement are also moving up the agenda, according to Sir Ian Diamond, principal and vice-chancellor of the University of Aberdeen. During this turbulent period of policy upheaval, he urges universities to engage with their communities in a multitude of exciting ways. “Imaginatively developed facilities,” he says, “can support and enhance higher education’s contribution to the economy.”
