In Focus Consumer Credit As managers, we control these processes

with all the monitoring and interaction with stakeholders and clients that accompany the process. Add to this systems and partner sourcing, system specification, business cases, price negotiation, and cost control for the whole cycle. l 360-degree leader – we lead teams, are expected to manage ourselves, lead or influence our peers, and lead our boss; the full 360-degree circle. l HR manager – our roles cover all aspects of recruitment, selection, induction, training and development, motivation, administration, management, talent development, succession,

and career planning. Do these sound familiar: l

Role model.

l Leader. lMentor. l Coach. l Advisor.

l Contract management – this can cover many scenarios, such as outsourcing, but,

as the manager, we are responsible for its core activities: administration, performance management, risk management, governance, and relationship management. l Project management – these can be one-off small projects or large-scale implementations, but we are expected to have project- management skills. To liaise and work with key stakeholders from around our business or with business partners. l Compliance – our industry is highly regulated and becoming more so each year. Compliance, audit, risk, and policy adherence are now core skills for our profession. For some of us, GDPR has come within our remit. l Networking – we work in a complex industry and learning to navigate your way through the waters is a skill. This is where networking becomes another core talent. We can never know everything, however, it is possible to know someone who has other experience and is willing to share knowledge.

This is a rare industry in that people love to share knowledge and skills. Links to the right business partners for your organisation are critical – you need to be sure that they are reputable and deliver on promises – this is where your network comes into its own. We all like recommendations from people we can trust. CICM organises many national and local

networking events and there are several forums and business events: take advantage wherever you can to get to know the great people in our industry.

Conclusion When we look at what a manager is expected to do within credit management, it truly is impressive, and it is time that we started to let the rest of the world know. Magic: the artful performance of impossible

things. So ‘magicians’? Yes. But please do not try to saw someone in half! That is next year’s project! CCR
