also recognise the event’s great attraction. In January, when briefing our new committee, Janet Grosvenor, a RORC treasure, kindly assembled a fascinating exhibition from our archives. Pride of place went to the beau- tiful Admiral’s Cup, released from secure storage for the night. Many of our members had never seen this magnifi- cent trophy before. Serendipity also presented us with the coincidental stay at the club of Ron Holland, whose design genius is interwoven into Admiral’s Cup history. My tiny contribution to the event was to sail on Ireland’s 1989 entry, the Farr One Tonner Hitchhiker, solely for that year’s Fastnet – a cold, wet, windy slog to the Rock and a merciful run home. Our trip was enlivened by a leaky boat, a leaky diesel tank and our failure to leave ashore the corrugated card- board packaging of our provisions. My abiding memory is of a nutrition regime of sparkling water and Hobnob biscuits… A splendid RYA lunch at the London Boat Show gave us a felicitous table placement beside Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, a living sailing legend and delightful company. The previous night he had won his fourth Yachtsman of the Year award. While born in London, Sir Robin has strong Irish roots and gives 17 March 1939 – St Patrick’s Day – as his date of birth. We spent much of the time talking about rugby. Among many pearls of wis- dom, to my question ‘How do you keep fit between races?’ his immediate reply was… ‘Go sailing!’ Three down, 33 to go!

anuary and February have proved surprisingly exciting months at RORC. You will have read of the Fastnet sellout – we are now trying to see how best to cope with this overwhelming demand for the 90th edition of our most famous race. ‘Demand’ also comes to mind in contemplat- ing the RORC Caribbean 600 – the golden gift of Antiguan Stan Pearson and our own John Burnie. Our struggle to survive the northern winter’s long ordeal is much eased by the contemplation of weaving through the beautiful islands and the territorial waters of four nations (a new quiz question…). This will be my fourth 600. Many members believe it to be our best event but no one should consider it a doddle. Our revered Admiral, Andrew McIrvine, has assembled our syndicate to charter the Southern Wind 93 Windfall. The Admiral’s ‘crowd-funding’ structure enables a dozen of us to enjoy the race at modest cost. Peopled by RORC glitterati, Windfallwill, inevitably, be dubbed the ‘Committee Boat’. The editor’s commissioning of Rob Weiland and his subsequent blueprint have put the revival of the Admiral’s Cup back on the agenda. The event has many fans, not least Eddie Warden-Owen, our CEO. As a modest alumnus I
