Ironically, while the new spar on Spindrift 2 is clearly enormous, in terms of chord it would look nothing special alongside some of the mega wing-spars seen on the unlimited oceanic multihulls of 30 years ago like Jet Services IV and Royale (both capsized with tragic results). Those rigs, however, were immensely hard to manage and sails at the time just could not keep up – the fabrics of the day simply growing under load. A stiff spar, high leach tensions and a bulging mainsail were never a good look
Construction
First we create a feedback loop with the builder and, in this case, with the Spindrift design team to evolve the final fabrication process. We support this by conducting numerous tests (materials, process, cross-section demonstrator, non-destructive analysis). Working so closely with the builder also informs our knowledge of the practical limits of the composite solutions available at any time. Once the fabrication process is finalised we further adapt our blueprints (drawing folder), taking into account ply tapering, nesting, the integration of easily built parts, etc. That gives us Version 2 of the fabrication drawings. At the end of the builder-engineer loop we can also confirm our weight targets, at which point a complete set of blueprints is handed to the builder to begin manufacture. In total, the design for the Spindrift 2mast represented 1,700 hours of engineering for HDS-GSEA Design – but it delivered a spar that is 500kg lighter than its predecessor.
Afloat
The mast is released from the yard and trials can begin, a big event for the team, for us… and for a large crowd that has gathered on the dockside! Somehow we condensed dock-load trials to a single day, thanks to meticulous preparation; also of course we only needed to test the mast – we validated the platform back in 2008! But even dock tests require experience. When you load a mast foot to 80 tonnes, any strange creak or groan becomes a source of real stress for everyone involved. Especially for our engineers. The following morning, and barely 36 hours after stepping a brand new, lighter and extremely sophisticated giant wing spar, sea trials began in earnest… And with complete confidence. HDS founder Hervé Devaux is working extensively with the Artemis America’s Cup team. Denis Gléhen is in charge of global structural design at Team France
