THROUGH THE
WINDOWS!
IT was once rumoured that the contemporary technological achievements of today will be out of date within two years of release. And there can be no doubt that the digital technology of our time refuses to stand still.
Over half a century ago, manufacturers and purveyors of entertainment media, all of which was totally analogue in construction, were telling us that it was highly unlikely, if at all possible, for such technology to change, let alone improve. But they had not anticipated the door opening to the incredible power of digital electronics. Once the door was fully open, analogue merchandise seemed to be chased away through the windows!
As consumers gradually engaged with the innovative technology of those days, by investing in the newly fangled Compact Disc (CD) players, so their “never to be repeated” plastic vinyl renditions began ending their days in trash bins (even recycle bins were futuristic at that time), second hand stores, jumble sales and the like.
Indeed, even I can remember shedding a tear or three when I released my strong holding of top notch vinyls in order to follow others into the unknown world of upmarket digital high fidelity (HiFi). Watching through a cyber window into that unknown world, just around the corner lurked digital video, followed closely by digital radio wireless communications (WiFi). Sometimes referred to as the digital trinity, the amalgam of audio, video and radio provides
Over the past decade our regular correspondent, Eric Thorn, has intermittently debated practical aspects of projecting images before audiences great and small. From analogue PowerPoint® to digital professionalism, Eric’s articles have proved helpful to many readers, some of whom have now raised a handful of common queries arising from the latest Microsoft Windows® operating system: Windows 10®.
us with the digital media which we all know and love, and that the younger generation cannot manage how some of us managed to grow up without!
Another Windows So, just when I was thinking that I have covered the topic of digital media in previous articles, I started receiving a number of queries from both Maintenance and Equipment News for Churches and Schools (MEN) readers, and other sources, mostly associated with the latest computer operating system from Microsoft®, namely Windows 10®.
to all manner of viruses and potentially malicious ills. Thus most, if not all, of us are quite happy to receive a multitude of inoculations including, for the vulnerable, an annual flu jab. Such injections do not guarantee that we will never suffer from individual sicknesses, but they do go a long way towards preventing such occurrences.
I suspect that many readers, especially from our church based subscribers, may have similar questions. So, as with some of my previous jottings, I have attempted to consolidate the most common questions and my answers. But, as always, I do stress that my responses are only my own personal views and my suggestions may not be universally helpful: There are so many facets that can affect individual situations, not least the specific settings that are peculiar to particular computers et al.
Instant protection jab We human beings may be created in the image of God but that does not prevent us from being susceptible

Back in 1986, the unthinkable happened. A personal computer virus was created that attacked the boot sector of the floppy disks used by IBM personal computers. At that time, IBM computers were probably the most popular and because nobody had ever heard of, or considered the possibility of, an electronic virus, computer drivers (users) were all taken by shock and surprise when they discovered that their electronic work stations had become dysfunctional. Once the software boffins investigation revealed the creation of an electronic virus, it soon became clear that this digital illness was contagious: spreading, as it was, through the Internet.
But at the same time as an anecdote was being sought, the very idea of creating malicious software was growing at such a pace that a digital inoculation for both personal and main frame computers saw the birth of a new category of software program publishing: that of antivirus software. Avast Software were among the first publishers of quality antivirus software, with their first general release taking place during 1988. Some important information about
