Seaweed Extract Enhances Root Development

The application of Ascoflex Plus seaweed extract as a foliar spray resulted in a significant increase in root development during the grow-in phase. Enhanced rooting improves nutrient uptake and drought tolerance and delivers stronger plant establishment. Trials have shown that seaweed biostimulants help stimulate natural plant processes that support early turf development.

R140 Seed Delivers Rapid Establishment And Season-Long Stability

Seed trials comparing a range of mixtures used for pitch grow-ins identified R140 as delivering the best balance of early growth and rapid surface coverage. Researchers observed faster germination,

strong early growth,

and rapid development into full grass coverage. R140 is the result of extensive trialling by French seed breeder, Topgreen. The 100% perennial ryegrass blend delivers rapid

establishment alongside

Summary

Kelly-Marie Clack, Agronomy & Technical and Research Lead at Origin, says that the findings are a direct result of manufacturers and turf professionals working together. “Grounds Managers around the country shared their experiences and observations with us, which led to the first research trial of its kind for pitch grow-ins. Its aim is to optimise the efficacy of every single product by applying exactly what the plant needs, when it needs it, eliminating waste, reducing cost, giving grounds teams the best opportunity to deliver superb playing surfaces.”

The key learning points for faster, stronger,

more uniform pitch

establishment while improving resource efficiency are; ✅ Delaying fertiliser

until seedling

emergence ✅Incorporating Origin liquid nutrition programmes for strong early growth ✅ Applying granular wetting agents to improve water efficiency

consistent,

stable performance throughout the playing season, providing a reliable, resilient, surface all year round.

Two of the ryegrass cultivars have tetraploid technology. Double the number of chromosomes makes tetraploid perennial ryegrasses high vigour, extremely stress tolerant plants. Increased

cellular chloroplast boosts chlorophyll production,

aiding energy absorption and processing. The outcome is a robust, hard-wearing, healthier plant with advanced establishment and recovery capability, even in cooler temperatures down to 4° Celsius. Stronger, denser root mass supports tensile strength and drought tolerance. These characteristics make R140 particularly well suited where fast establishment and early playability are priorities.
