Letter from the Publisher, continued...

we prepare now for the short and long-term effects on our state’s equine population. We truly believe the spirit of collaboration and especially community is

critical now more than ever. Each and everyone one of us shares an im- mense love and passion for horses. Our circumstances may be extremely different and we know our access to our horses remains varied at this time. We all, however, share that one common bond: the horse. Te more community we create now around that bond, the easier and swifter our response and recovery will be.

Our History in Photographs Our official publication, Te Equiery,

faced some last-minute editorial changes this month as our traditional Preakness is- sue has been postponed until the running in September. Instead, we used the month of May to move forward our “Look into the Archives” issue! We reached deep into our archives and the collective memory of our readers to produce my favorite issue of 2020 thus far. Te highlight of this issue is an article entitled “It Started With A Trailer” about Burt and Edna Lytle. Te Lytles have maintained a significant pres- ence in Te Equiery since 1990 and are certainly part of Maryland’s il- lustrious horse history. Tey are also a part of my personal horse history. My first adult saddle was purchased from Cindy Lytle (we still have it!)

and my family leased three of Edna’s medium ponies for my twin sister Katie. I fondly remember visiting her farm as we picked out new ponies. My favorite was Seymour, a little bay pony with an insanely thick mane! Stories and memories like these have an ability to lift our spirits during difficult times. Te Equiery asked our readers throughout the month of April to submit photos from their archives like their earliest image on a horse. We shared these photos this month instead of our usual “Out and About” photo column which will be on hold until the stay at home order is lifted. Te earliest image of me (and my twin sister Katie) is pictured here on a pony named Wiggles when we were about five months old. Not a moment I remember, but one I cherish nonetheless! Please continue to send us photos of you

staying home with your horses (if you are so fortunate), your personal horse history archives, and what digital activities your clubs and associations may be holding online. We have seen some great virtual means of maintaining community at this time!

In fact, as soon as this issue arrives in

your mailbox or at one of our many dis- tributors deemed an essential business, we

will be launching an amazing virtual activity for our readers! Keep your eye on Te Equiery Facebook page for details.
