by Stacey Wells T e 60th Anniversary of the Washington Interna- tional Horse Show concluded Sunday, October 28, after a week full of tough and exciting competition at Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. As is tradition, WIHS ended with the WIHS Regional Hunter Finals–Pony and Horse Divi-

sions– with Marylanders taking home top prizes. McKenna Gregorio of Poolesville piloted Autumn Frost to fi rst place in the WIHS Regional Hunter Finals – Pony Division. Payton Flander of Harmony Ridge Sta- ble rode Jamrock to second place, with Brianna McColl (Laughing Fox Farm) coming in third aboard Piedmont’s Uptown Girl. Brittani Director of Potomac won the WIHS Regional Hunter Fi- nals–Horse Division aboard her own Rococo, a 19 year old Trakehner gelding. Both Director and her trainers, Carolyn Krome, Kenny Krome and Jennifer Newman, were thrilled with her victory. “Going into WIHS I was confi dent Cody was going to be great, as he’s shown at the Capital One Arena numerous times before,” remarked Director. “How- ever, I never thought I was going to win the class.” She and Rococo had competed several times before at WIHS, but this year felt diff erent. “My trainer, Kenny Krome and I both decided this year was by far our simplest, most non-stressful WIHS yet,” said Director. “T ere was just something about this year that felt right”. T e 2019 show season will be the last year Director will be competing aboard Rococo before his well- deserved retirement, so winning the WIHS Regional Hunter Finals and being Reserve Grand Champion was, as Director put it, “an absolute dream come true.” Junior rider Aidan Dubin (McDonough School) clinched second place aboard Pin-up and Jessica Van Brocklyn Smith (Alexandria, VA) came in third aboard Romulus. Madeline Schaefer of Westminster came in 19th in the Hunter Phase

of the WIHS Junior Equitation class out of over 38 entries. Schaefer entered the competition with 2,056 points accumulated showing in WIHS’s Equitation East. WIHS’s big jumper classes kicked off on T ursday, October 25, with

Dressed as Danny Zuko from Grease with his horse decked out as the famed car Greased Lightning, Moggre scored an impressive 65 points in a time of 40.23 seconds. T ursday, October 25, also hosted WIHS Barn Night, which was an action-packed evening, including fi erce competition among local barns for bragging rights, a golf cart, and a clinic with a top rider. Among the prize winners were Meadowbrook Stables for the largest overall group, followed by Harmony Ridge Stable for the largest Maryland group, Tamarack Stables for largest Virginia group and Rock Creek Park Horse Centerfor largest DC group. T e Garrison Forest School won the Spirit Contest, showing lots of blue themed decorations and energy! T eir spirit won them a custom refurbished golf cart courtesy of United Metro Golf Cart. T e Butler School won the Poster Contest, with Potomac Horse Cen- ter coming in second. T e winners were followed by Commonwealth Foxhounds Pony Club and Twin Oaks, placing 3rd and 4th respectively. T e Iron Bridge Hounds Pony Club clinched fi rst place for the Video Contest, winning a clinic with Stacia Klein Madden. T e theme of both the Poster and Video Contest was ‘Riding T rough the Decades’ and all of the entries interpreted the theme in unique ways. On Friday, October 26, the Puissance Wall, sponsored by fi rst-time

WIHS sponsor Land Rover, took center stage during Military Night, with Aaron Vale riding Finou 4 to win for the third consecutive year.
