2019 SENIOR LIVING BY DESIGN NOMINEES


13. Menno Haven Retirement Communities, Chambers- burg, Pa., RDG Planning & Design. A new rehabilitation center is designed to achieve the WELL Building certifica- tion, a standard that advances human health. Non-tradi- tional features include a health and wellness library, staff fitness programs, and a biophilia plan, with nature and natural patterns incorporated throughout the building.


14. Merrill Gardens at Carolina Park, Mount Pleasant, S.C., Urbal Architecture. This community-within-a-community is the newest addition to a 1,700-acre master planned development, Carolina Park. The independent/assisted/ memory care community is connected via an extensive trail system, allowing residents to visit neighborhood amenities such as the local community center and pub- lic library.


15. MorningStar of Rio Rancho, Rio Rancho, N.M., Thoma- Holec Design. This resort-style senior living commu- nity was designed for residents to enjoy retirement in a wellness-focused environment. The objective was to create a mix of residential and design concepts without compromising service delivery for the assisted living and memory care residents.


16. Normandy Square, Madison, Wis., MSP Real Estate. An affordable project for independent seniors, the commu- nity is integrated into the urban fabric of the larger neigh- borhood. The building incorporates sustainable features such as high-performance windows and doors and in- floor hydronic heat.


17. Orchard Estate of Woodbury, Woodbury, N.Y., Bench- mark. Orchard Estate is the first senior living community in Woodbury, on Long Island. It offers both assisted living and memory care. The interior design captures the visual elements that make Long Island special. The bistro has a curved bar, nautical wood paneling, and custom bar stools.


18. Revel Eagle, Eagle, Idaho, PushPoint Marketing. An in- dependent living community, Revel Eagle has three con- nected buildings including a clubhouse. The Craftsman style was chosen for its warm, nostalgic charm and com- patibility with nearby architecture. The 15,430-square-foot clubhouse contains an expansive list of amenities, such as a restaurant, spa, fitness center, and art studio.


19. The Chelsea at Shrewsbury, Shrewsbury, N.J., The Point Group. This community pays homage to the area’s heri- tage and culture, helping to connect the new building to a historic place, with classic colonial architecture with a modern flair.


20. The Lakeside at Amelia Island, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Sagestone Partners. Coastal modern design was used throughout interiors, keeping the spaces light and bright and providing a high-end hospitality look for this full-ser- vice senior living community.


21. The Moments, Lakeville, Lakeville, Minn., The Moments Memory Care. The resident experience drives the de- sign of this standalone memory care community. Special features include odor-free air quality, an abundance of natural lighting, outdoor access, and carefully curated mini-destinations for activities.


22. The Phoenix at James Creek, Cumming, Ga., Banko Design. In the Appalachian foothills and minutes from Lake Lanier, the community reflects the natural beauty and southern charm of the surrounding area. Solid wood shiplap paneling is used throughout as feature walls and a textural backdrop to local artwork.


23. The Residence at Melrose Station, Melrose, Mass., The Architectural Team. This assisted living and memory care property is thoughtfully integrated with the city’s center. The five-story building takes its cues from nearby brick buildings. Outside, a new pocket park was formed to pro- vide an intergenerational public space where residents and community members can interact.


24. The Residence at Vinnin Square, Swampscott, Mass., The Architectural Team. The campus design is informed by traditional New England vernacular offering an ap- pealing aesthetic for residents and families, stylistically in keeping with the coastal location. Details include over- hanging eaves with decorative bracket supports, batten board, and clapboard articulation.


25. The Ridglea Senior Living, Fort Worth, Texas, Senior by Design. The community offers luxurious assisted living and memory care in the heart of southwest Fort Worth. The de- sign approach results in luxurious, soul-warming interiors that one would expect to find in America’s finest homes.
