The Bornholmer Strasse border crossing was where the Berlin Wall was first breached by citizens of East Germany in 1989. The world’s media began to broadcast images of the citizens of East and West Berlin punching holes in the concrete Berlin Wall. One 19-year-old photographer decided this was a historic event he could not miss. With a small knapsack, secondhand camera and five rolls of film, John Angerson headed to the transforming city. While he wandering the streets, he saw demonstrations with huge

crowds of young and old fuelled by excitement and hopes for a united Germany. Amid the mayhem, one frame became a defining image of Angerson’s career. It won him Ilford photographer of the year and a full-time contract at his local newspaper in Northamptonshire. That one fleeting moment on the streets of Berlin 28 years ago kick-started a young person’s career in photography.
