Campaigns Target politicians
On Friday 24 March we will kick things off for the week of action by lobbying politicians to make the case that local news maters to everyone. Whether you are based in the UK
or Ireland - we are asking reps and members to organise local meetings on this date. Any local initiatives that target politicians will complement national and regional activity linked to the Irish Oireachtas, Westminster, the Welsh Assembly, Scotish parliament, Stormont and the London Assembly. Plans already agreed include Welsh
politicians visiting local media workplaces during the week of action and hosting a roundtable event with Stormont politicians. In the House of Commons
there will be a series of initiatives including meetings with government representatives, an Early Day Motion and related parliamentary debates. Model leters and briefing materials for politicians will be available on the NUJ website soon:

Bringing people together
An NUJ reps’ summit will be held in Manchester on Saturday 1 April as the culmination of the week of action.
Involve your local community
In conjunction with the TUC, the NUJ will be launching a global public pledge for the week of action that calls for sustainable media models and investment in quality local journalism. Te pledge will be hosted on the TUC’s
going to work website and launched with an email sent to more than 180,000 people. Te union will create pledge cards for NUJ members to hand out to their contacts with details of the pledge and we want all members to take this campaign out to local communities and get people supporting the pledge and signing up online. All members will be able to download leaflets from the website and order a range of publicity materials that can be sent in the post. Members and reps need to take the pledge out and gain support from their own local community groups, politicians, sister unions and local trade councils. Te NUJ Leeds branch has already placed an order for 10,000 bespoke leaflets for them to hand out during the week of action.
NUJ
Tis meeting follows on from a similar and successful event in April 2015. Te summit will bring together reps, activists and union organisers to discuss the key issues in local news and how the union can strengthen journalists and journalism in response to the challenges and changes within the industry. Chapels are being asked to hold simultaneous workplace meetings on Wednesday 29 March and to take pictures or selfies in their newsrooms that they can share online. Chapels will be tabling motions on key themes such as clickbait and discussing ways in which to maximise the numbers signing up to the TUC/NUJ public pledge. If you want to request posters and leaflets for workplace meetings or the reps summit then please email:
