START UP OF THE MONTH Freeing up freelancers Interview by Scott Thompson Adam Goodall and Samuel O’Connor met at PwC and went on to launch
ProConfirm, selling the venture in 2014. They then started freelancing, became frustrated with how hard it was to manage money and so Monizo was born

BS Journal: Tell us about
Samuel O’Connor: Monizo is the world’s first mobile bank account for freelancers. Our mission is to eliminate admin days for them (#NoAdminDays). When Adam, my co-founder, and I sold our first business we went freelance.
We found the finance side of freelancing time-consuming and stressful, despite coming from finance backgrounds.
When we spoke to other freelancers we found that everyone has the same challenges when it comes to finance: unexpected tax bills, shoebox of receipts, clients not paying and a poor
service from their bank. We realised we could automate all of this and free up freelancers to concentrate on what they love doing. We’re currently building a waiting list of people who will get early access to the product when they sign up on our website. We’ll release the first version to this group in autumn this year.
