National Right to Repair Coalition Reconvenes to Address Telematics and Compliance Issues T

he national Coalition behind the 2012 Right to Repair Motor Vehicle campaign was reactivated late in 2018 in response to compliance issues sur- rounding the existing Right to Repair law passed in Massachusetts in 2013. At that time, a Memorandum of Under- standing was also signed between the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (Alliance), the Association of Global Automakers (Global), the Automo- tive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA) and the Coalition for Auto- motive Repair Equality (CARE) that extended the essential provisions for

all light vehicles negotiated in the Massa- chusetts law to all 50 states.

Over the past five years, vehicle manu- facturers have complied with the MOU to varying degrees. The R2R Coalition has notified Coalition members, includ- ing the ARA, that manufacturers are

trying to circumvent the law through telematics. The requirement to pro- vide access to the vehicle’s diagnostic and repair system via a universal inter- face and the requirement to offer dai- ly, monthly, and yearly website repair subscriptions are also not being 100 percent followed. Legislation has been introduced in Massachusetts to address these loopholes.

The updated Coalition website is found at www.massrighttorepair.org and ARA is continuing to work with the Coalition and will keep members informed as to any developments. 
