Introduction

Please note: School curriculum and instruction will vary - especially in middle school. US Sailing recommends working with your local educational institutions to meet their needs for instruction. REACH is correlated to the National Standards.

The REACH modules are designed to be implemented by both formal and informal educators working in collaboration and/or independently. Possible candidates include but are not limited to US Sailing certified instructors, formal middle school teachers, and informal youth program instructors.

Many of US Sailing’s member organizations such as community sailing centers and yacht clubs work with their local public and private schools as well as youth organizations in after-school, summer, and school time programs. The REACH curriculum is designed to be implemented either in a formal classroom setting and/ or an informal setting such as a sailing center. Every teaching environment will vary, so the implementation of the modules will vary from site to site. REACH will have the most success when co-taught by formal educators and sailing instructors.

All modules include classroom and on the water activities. As an educator you will need to pre-read curriculum and select the portions applicable to your audience and setting. All student groups will be able to implement at least one part of every module. Each module is designed with multiple parts that can be implemented either independently or incrementally and sequentially. REACH has been successfully implemented by teachers and sailing instructors independently and collaboratively with a co-teaching model. This can be formatted in the following designs:
