Introduction

1. Introduction The US Sailing Reach Initiative Sustainability Guide is designed to support sailing organizations in implementing best practices to minimize their impact on the natural environment. It combines simple solutions with resources from credible programs with proven track records in achieving sustainability in their everyday functions.

As water recreation enthusiasts, we recognize it is important that we educate our communities and protecting our playgrounds.

The focus of this document is to give organizations a resource for environmental education & sustainable practices. It is a working document and we welcome any suggestions, comments or questions.

US Sailing & Sustainability

This is an exciting time at US Sailing as we have challenged ourselves to be even more relevant to sailors and local sailing organizations by providing tools that will help them meet their challenges and changing needs.

Our objectives are to: 1. Promote participation and access to sailing; 2. Develop and deliver first-class education programs that support all facets of sailing: on-the-water skills, safety, instruction and coaching, officiating and high performance; 3. Establish a culture of competitive excellence.

Sailing is evolving and at US Sailing we are dedicated to a healthy and sustainable future that inspires new sailors and provides a pathway to a lifetime of sailing that is carried on to future generations. To thrive, sailing must grow participation in all areas and at all levels, while upholding the highest standards of excellence and fairness.

We also understand that local sailing organizations (e.g., yacht clubs, community sailing programs, sailing schools, class and owner associations, event organizers) are the foundation for the sport and central for the future, and the work we do must meet their evolving needs.

Furthermore, we are optimizing our organizational structure, operations and resources to improve communications and provide a responsive and efficient support system for the local sailing organizations.
