Facilities for the Disabled

Lift business C

los-o-Mat, already established as Britain’s leading supplier of accessible washrooms for the thousands of people who need the help of a carer, now has a range of easy-to-use lifting/transfer equipment to optimise their safety and dignity. As importantly, all the equipment is available with full technical back-up, and service & maintenance support.

“In effect, almost 10 carers every day are injured through ‘people handling’,” says Kelvin Grimes, Clos-o-Mat’s project manager for its out of home facilities. “With our increasing numbers of elderly and obese people, the figure is only set to increase. Yet for a comparatively nominal investment, which can be offset as capital equipment, a hoist could be fitted. It would take up no additional space in the WC compartment, and would improve safety of all involved. “Importantly, properly publicised, it would increase business: up to 20% of a

toilet facilities provided; they, via social media, do discuss where is especially accessible/disabled-friendly. And our research highlights that for the majority of carers who need to physically manouevre their loved one, a hoist is their first choice in away from home personal care assistive technology.” Clos-o-Mat’s ceiling track (X/Y) hoists can carry up to 200kg (31 stone), and can, at the push of a button, be moved to wherever needed in the room, precisely positioning the person where the carer requires. The hoists are designed to

support the user as needed, and be simple for the carer to transfer. Clos-o-Mat not only supplies the ceiling track hoist systems, but can provide comprehensive support, including design, installation, plus after-sales service and maintenance.

More than technology, transforming lives

Challenge: To create a user-friendly system to make the life of its user easier. The system needed to provide all the controls necessary to allow its disabled owner the ability to live independently in their apartment in The Netherlands. Solution: The Crestron system allows the lighting, heating, entry system, blinds, and AV to be controlled from a touch panel specially adapted for the user.

his worthy winner of ‘Best User Experience’ at the Crestron Integration Awards 2015 clearly demonstrates how a Crestron home automation solution not only makes controlling your home more convenient and efficient; it can also change the lives of those who need it the most. A clear winner in its category, Morelight’s work to transform apartment living for this client has resulted in the client being able to enjoy independent living, rather than having to move into a residential carehome.

Morelight was tasked with adapting an entire apartment to suit the needs of its disabled owner. The brief was to create a system that could control everything, including the entrance door, sliding doors, blinds, lighting, heating, audio, TV and

intercom, from a touch panel suitable for the one-armed owner, who also requires a wheelchair to get around their home. The easy to use Crestron touch panel that the owner uses is the MTX-3 Handheld Wireless Touch Screen. With both a touch screen and manual buttons, this remote delivers exceptional control and can be fully customisable. Its sleek form factor is easy to hold, with large tactile pushbuttons and backlighting for a wireless control solution that is both intuitive and exceptionally simple to use. The infiNET EX® network technology works alongside the 3-Series Control System® and means that it can be used anywhere in the home to control any device around the home, perfect for when mobility is be an issue. From the handheld touch panel, the

owner can answer the doorbell and let in guests, open the sliding doors for easy access outside and adjust his lighting and heating systems. At the end of the day he can shut down the property with just one button on the touch panel, or via the keypad by the door. This allows him to turn off all the lights and shut the blinds at the end of the day without having to travel around his property. The new adjustments have allowed the client to remain living an independent life in his own home. If this could not be achieved, he would have had to move to a special nursing home. For added security, the touch panel is connected to Crestron’s CEN-NVS200, a network video streamer that allows the owner to check the video stream from the front door before allowing guests in. www.crestron.eu.
