8 UPDATES Aviation Sector Urges

Government to Extend Furlough Scheme to Retain Jobs

THE aviation sector has urged the UK government to extend the furlough scheme in order to save jobs. The furlough scheme, due to finish at the end

of September, is the only thing protecting jobs in vulnerable Covid-hit industries such as aviation. Unions and trade bodies across the sector say the extension of the furlough scheme is vital for job retention for aviation industry workers as travel restrictions have not been fully lifted and the industry is still struggling with Covid debt. Unite Assistant General Secretary Diana Holland

has said that jobs in the sector would be ‘needlessly lost’ is something is not done to help. “Foremost is the aviation sector, whose recovery is still delayed and unlike any other sector is hugely reliant on the lifting of international restrictions. As a minimum the furlough scheme should continue for the aviation sector,” she said. “A failure to do so will dramatically damage the long- term recovery of this critical sector to the UK economy.” Chancellor Rishi Sunak has so far rejected all calls for an extension.

Air Travel on the Rise Again as Appetite Grows for Holidays in the Sun

AIR passengers numbers are on the rise once more and we all rush to jet off to the sun now that foreign holidays are once again a possibility. The initial spike was noted in Ireland with the launch

of the EU digital Covid certificate, while in Northern Ireland, the release of the Digital Covid Certificate saw holidaymakers rushing to their local travel agents. Data from Ireland’s Central Statistics Office (CSO)

showed that in July, there were 380,700 overseas passenger arrivals and 428,600 overseas passenger departures, a 138% and 115% rise respectively on June. It has also been reported that a third of adults are planning to take at least one trip in the next three months.

With EU countries beginning to remove restrictions for fully vaccinated travellers from the UK and more and more countries being added to the Green and Amber lists, we can be sure that these figures will continue to rise.

depression and sometimes, to suicide. On the bus, amongst other practical support materials, we use a small game of 5asideCHESS as a tool to help get people connecting and talking, which is a very important first step. “I would like to commend Stena Line for their

support in enabling us to bring the bus to Belfast. We received a very positive response at the Breaker Breaker event in Belfast and a high level of engagement. Our 5asideCHESS sets are a self-help ice breaking tool to help people to connect with others and to develop social and life skills. This is important especially with those people who feel under pressure and lonely at this difficult time.”

Stena Line provided transport for the bus to and

from Northern Ireland as well as supporting members of the group to engage with its passengers and crew to

promote the work of the mental health charity. Anna Breen, Stena Line’s Freight Commercial Manager (Irish Sea) said: “We were delighted to have the opportunity to work with and support the 5asideCHESS Battling Suicide Bus initiative, especially at the Breaker Breaker Truck Event which was well attended by many of the truckers we work with on a daily basis and their families. “We all know the stresses and strains which have been

put on people in the last 18 months. The commercial driving community has been experiencing its own issues in recent months so any opportunity to help shine a light on these and provide some practical support is one we wholeheartedly endorse at Stena Line. I’ll like to congratulate Diane and her term on this very important initiative, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.”
