Purple Disco Machine dances to No.1 ANALYSIS
n BY ALAN JONES
Choice’s The Player, released a decade earlier, Playbox catapults to the top of the Upfront chart this week It’s the seventh No.1 in total and second thus far in 2021 for German DJ and producer Tino Piontek in his Purple Disco Machine guise. His first was Dished (Male Stripper) in September 2018, and his last was Moss Kena & The Knocks collaboration Fireworks, a chart-topper in May. A fortnight after Calvin Harris scored his 23rd
A
Commercial Pop No.1, the only act with more – David Guetta – racks up the 34th of his career with Remember. A complex house canterer made with Becky Hill, it is Guetta’s fourth Commercial Pop No.1 in nine weeks, and is lifted from Hill’s upcoming debut album. Hill has been a regular on the Top 75 singles chart for more than seven years, racking up 14 OCC hits, including Remember, which is currently in the Top 10. Remember is Hill’s sixth Commercial Pop No.1, the
typically funky retro anthem, with a throbbing hi-NRG beat on loan from Sylvester’s 1984 release Rock The Box and vocals from First
first being Oliver Heldens collab Gecko (Overdrive) in 2014, the most recent Space last November. First No.1 on the Black Music chart in 2007 via
Kanye West collaboration Good Life, Floridian rapper T-Pain is back on top this week with I Like Dat, his collaboration with Californian R&B/pop singer Kehlani. Edging 2-1 this week, it thus arrives at the summit one week short of 10 years since T-Pain’s last coronation, with August 2011 Snoop Dogg liaison, Boom. Kehlani’s only previous Black Music No.1 was 2018 Saweetie teaming Icy Girl, though the bulk of the chart action on that, it has to be said, was triggered by Saweetie’s solo version of the cut, not the Kehlani-featuring Bae Mix.
