Project M

city car: the journey, so far

Project M (M for mobility) is a three-way co-engineering collaboration led by Shell with engine specialists Geo Technology and car design experts Gordon Murray Design to build an ultra-efficient, city-car using existing technologies.

The vehicle design features Gordon Murray Design’s iStream concept which uses lightweight materials to minimise weight whilst preserving crash-worthiness. The car has a novel seating arrangement where the driver sits front and centre and passengers sit behind and to the side. Its final weight is likely to be some 250kg lighter than a Smart car.

The engine is based on a Mitsubishi 660cc, 3 cylinder design. It has been extensively re-designed by Geo Technology to minimise friction. Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings have been applied to the piston and valvetrain to preserve adequate levels of durability.

The car will run on quality Shell gasoline fuel.. Shell is developing a low friction concept lubricant in the 0W-12 range using Shell PurePlus Technology (gas-to-liquid) base oils to help further improve engine efficiency. The viscosity of this oils changes less with temperature and is more resistant to high temperatures than conventional oils.

All three strands are aimed at minimising the vehicle’s energy demand whilst delivering the reduced amount of energy as efficiently as possible. Robert Mainwaring, Shell Lubricants Innovation Technology Manager, said: “Shell PurePlus Technology offers a great starting point for close to the edge but safe lubricants, striking the right balance between efficiency and hardware durability. Our ‘thought leadership paper on wheels’ is aimed at provoking discussion and innovative thinking about

personal transport in urban areas”.

The car is fully constructed and is currently going through the shake down process. The next major milestone will be on-track and cycles testing ahead of the spring 2016 unveil.
