RAZIL HAS, UNLIKE the vast majorit of territories covered by Nielsen BookScan, not crowned a playscript of a stage production in London as its bestsell- ing book of the year. To be fair, the nation (and Rio in particular) was a litle busy during Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s release around August last year, and it’s understandable if its inhabitants were a bit too distracted to pop into a bookshop. (Admitedly, it wasn’t a problem Brits had in 2012: 1.9 million copies of the Fiſty Shades trilogy were sold in the UK during the London Olympics.) Instead, Jojo Moyes took gold and silver in Brazil’s bestseller list for the 52 weeks to 11th February 2017, with her love-and- Dignitas duology Aſter You and Me Before You combining to shiſt more than half a million copies. The film adaptation of Me Before You went straight to the top of the Brazilian box office in June and, as a result, the film tie-in edition also hits the top 10, selling a further 117,276 copies. Moyes is unquestionably the Brazilian market’s rainha of 2016, bringing in a heſty BRL23.2m and outearning even J K Rowling, whose average selling price was a whop- ping eight BRL more than the Moyes oeuvre’s a.s.p.

(Joe Wicks, eat your heart out.) Manoela also features as one of three Brazilians— alongside psychiatrist Augusto Cury and textbook writers William Cereja and Thereza Cochar—in the most- valuable author ranking.

Rossi, the popstar Catholic priest, is another Brazilian celebrit who reli- ably tops the book charts—as well as Ruah, his 2015 title Philia appears in 10th place.

Interestingly, “Me Before You” beat “The Girl on the Train” in box office receipts in Italy, but not in book sales—Paula Hawk- ins’ commuter thriller outsold Moyes’ romance by 8,000 copies. The Moyes, the merrier

Three of Nielsen’s overseas territories demonstrate remarkably varied book-buying habits, with Brit Jojo Moyes dominating in Brazil, and Spain and Italy both revealing their fondness for an animated cheese-monikered mouse. Kiera O’Brien reports
