while the en suite is a “workhorse room” in the home, homeowners also desire a luxury experience, and so shower baths offer the best of both worlds – both practical and facilitating an indulgent experience. He believes that over the next fi ve years we’ll see an increase in smaller-footprint baths coming into the market, offering more choice for a much wider audience.

Shower power Where a shower, or a shower and separate bath, are preferred, there are some great space-saving options available, including Merlyn’s Arysto Six or Eight Infold shower doors or Frontline’s Aquaglass+ Lux, as well as the Aquadart Rolla 8 enclosure. Says Rob Harrison, managing director at Cavalier Bathrooms: “Recent innovations in shower enclosures have allowed many ranges to appear at the forefront of the market due to increased demand for a wet-room aesthetic. Through the installation of certain shower enclosures, smaller spaces can be maximised to create an ample and luxurious showering area, regardless of architectural obstacles or limited mobility. Innovation in sliding- door technology allows for larger apertures, ensuring easy access to the showering area.” And, of course, fl ush-to-fl oor step-free shower trays, such as those offered by Kaldewei, Bette and many others, will often be specifi ed in new bathrooms. Finally, concealed shower valves are useful – as well as hiding unsightly pipework, they also offer design fl exibility. As Grohe UK category manager Elina Enqvist-Twomey explains: “Positioning of a shower valve in an exposed system is limited by the length of the shower hose. However, this is eliminated with a concealed shower system. The freedom to create a truly bespoke shower space is enabled thanks to the concealed valve being able to be placed on an opposing wall away from the outlet.” Enqvist-Twomey adds that touchless taps are often overlooked for smaller bathrooms, although their typically slim profi les and the lack of handles or levers help maximise space at the basin. These are also a good solution for multigenerational homes or for elderly users who might struggle with handles. There are a wide range of stylish taps available to suit compact bathrooms such as Perrin and Rowe’s Hoxton single- lever basin mixer. This chrome monobloc mixer offers a single lever to control operation and water temperature to help save on basin space.

The devil in the detail It’s clear that bathrooms are getting smaller, so maximising space is crucial for creating a room that will work for years to come. Wall- hung, compact storage and sanitaryware, as well as recessed mirror cabinets, concealed shower valves, touchless and slimline basin mixers, folding, frameless enclosures and shower baths or

smaller-footprint baths can all form part of your armoury. But Waters Bath of Ashbourne director Lee Frost warns that while larger bathrooms can be more forgiving, in any space the clarity of quality is magnifi ed when the room size is reduced. “So, in a smaller space, the devil really is in the detail and so the intelligence of the design and quality of each element is vital to the overall aesthetic.”

Retailer View: Plum choices

Adam Chard, bathroom expert at online bathroom retailer Victoria Plum, talks about the latest market trends

With UK homes, and bathrooms in general, getting smaller, we’re seeing a shift towards space-saving, functional furniture that helps homeowners enhance their

storage options, while reducing clutter. Homeowners are becoming more eco-conscious, seeking out products that can

help them save water, such as dual-fl ush toilets and taps with fl ow restrictors. This green focus will have a major impact on the way products are designed moving forwards, not only in terms of water-effi ciency, but packaging, too. Thanks to advanced manufacturing techniques, bathroom furniture can now be

made in volume in all shapes and sizes, offering consumers a greater choice than ever before. Moisture-resistant materials offer a more durable product with surfaces that simply wipe clean, while push-to-open doors and drawers with soft-close mechanisms provide a more discreet look and feel. There is also smart technology to consider. With more and more consumers

purchasing a smart-home system, like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, they are seeking out ways this can be used in all areas of their home, including the bathroom. Underfl oor heating and smart showers are just two ways in which the bathroom experience can now be controlled by an integrated smart-home system.
