Hardware design/installation

never completely ligature-free if it has a door. We are pleased that suppliers like Safehinge are looking at this and making new products that are robust and safe – and look good too.” Carl Need, managing director of the Anti-

Ligature Shop, which performed the installation at the Broadoak Unit for Mersey Care, emphasised that the Trust is not alone in its desire to find new products that are able to do the job, but simultaneously look good. He said: “The two questions we get asked most commonly are: ‘What are the best products to meet current standards?’, and ‘Which will be the least disruptive to fit?’ Safehinge doors tick both boxes because, as well as being well-made and robust, the customer service and back-up are second to none, and the company’s products are designed to be easy to fit and maintain.

“Having a good relationship between client and supplier is crucial”, he adds. “It’s about getting the right people at the right meetings. We are not just supplying a product – we are fitting it and liaising with staff and patients.”

ACCURATE SPECIFICATION AND MANUFACTURE Another way to reduce disruption during installation is to ensure that the specification and manufacturing are accurate. In November 2015 we appointed Chris Chambers as our doorset manager to oversee this part of the process. He has more than 20 years’ experience with Leaderflush Shapland scheduling and project managing doorset projects, some valued at as

much as £2 m – making him perfectly qualified to help customers with specification, surveying, and delivery of doorsets. He will even get involved in training installers on site if it is their first time using our doorset. Looking to the future, we will continue to work with customers to come up with more products that help to create less institutional, safer environments for vulnerable mental healthcare service-users and the staff that are there to help them get better.

The landscape is definitely changing, and both NHS and private healthcare providers

are doing a good job in driving that change. We will be focusing even more on speaking to stakeholders, as they are the ones who have to step in when there is an emergency and somebody’s life is at risk. We are looking at a number of innovations for the future. Aesthetics will remain very important in current door design, and we are looking at how we can design out all the visible metal finishes, and at moving away from square vision panels in doors to more rounded designs that help to create a softer, more soothing environment.

n

a sense of security

Red Alert staff attack systems have been protecting staff in the workplace from the threat of attack and abuse for more than 15 years.

The new Curo alarm transmitter gives staff the ‘sense of security’ that help can be quickly summoned, by the press of a button or the tug of a transmitter.

Response personnel are notified of a call for assistance by interfacing with radio paging equipment and indicator panels. With the technology being based on high-powered IR transmission, functionality, reliability and simplicity of use are key attributes of the Red Alert system.
