Sanitaryware systems

shapes and features which can absorb impact and are easy to repair if they get damaged. Coupling this process with ligature resistance and aesthetics is no small challenge, but is something that we pride ourselves in achieving.

THE PROGRAMMABLE WASHROOM Dart Valley Systems is well known as a leader in electronically controlled washroom equipment, and this is most definitely the case within the mental health sector. We provide standard en suite packages for high security products. However, in some cases customers may want something a little different. Due to the versatility and malleability of our software we can customise our controls to suit specific scenarios within a mental healthcare facility. This is even easier now that Dart Valley Systems can harness programmable sensors and controls which offer both purging and lock-out functionality. All parameters can be changed and customised via the use of the DVS Handheld programmer, which means changes can be made quickly on site without any manufacturer intervention. Dart Valley Systems indeed prides itself on being able to provide a solution to a customer’s needs efficiently and effectively by having full control over every water outlet by programming each sensor individually to ensure areas are tailored to the user’s needs and current situation. The following case studies and testimonials describe just a few of the many successful projects we have undertaken in the mental healthcare arena, where we have met, and indeed often excelled, our clients’ already high expectations and specific requirements.

CASE STUDIES: Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Simon Orridge, Capital Projects manager at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (formerly Derbyshire Mental Health NHS Trust), says of his experience of DVS sanitaryware components since joining the Trust in August 2008: “The Trust currently operates various mental health units – from outpatient to inpatient secure facilities. On joining the Trust I soon became aware of Dart Valley Systems, and this marked the start of a strong working relationship with the company which would flourish in the following years. “Via investment in R&D, I believe DVS excels

in the three key priority areas for sanitaryware destined for healthcare facility use – advanced infection control, reduction of ligature risk, and security. The company has always provided the Trust with a competitive package and a superior after-sales service, coupled with an innovative approach. “A recent DVS innovation is a remote hand-

held programmer, which helps our Maintenance Department to efficiently adjust settings to outlets without having to gain access through maintenance hatches and cupboards. Real-time data can then be uploaded to our systems, which enables us to more accurately monitor water systems. “Dart Valley Systems has always been conscious of the work packages our Trust must deliver; the continued one-to-one contact with the company has been beneficial to both parties, with DVS, for example, gaining greater knowledge of facilities and challenging

environments in healthcare, which in turn enables it to make further improvements. The products and services we purchase from Dart Valley Systems more than satisfy our requirements – both product and maintenance-wise.”

The Tamarind Centre, Birmingham An award-winning 89-bedded unit in Bordesley Green, Birmingham, The Tamarind Centre provides assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation for men in a medium secure environment, and serves the population of Central and North Birmingham. The unit forms part of the overall development plan for the Yardley Green Campus, and was located to the centre of the site – with external green spaces and courtyards – to ensure a quiet and therapeutic environment. Birmingham & Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust selected DVS to supply and install a range of its ‘popular’ Safe Ensuite high security and flushvalve products. Safety, strength, reliability, water-saving benefits, and hygienic no-touch operation, were among the key factors behind the Trust’s choice of supplier. Products supplied included Safe Ensuite WC pans and basins with backplates, sensor- operated flushvalve kits, Aquarius sensor taps, and TMV3-approved shower towers. In June 2013, shortly after the facilities’ opening, the centre won ‘The Built in Quality Awards’ run by Birmingham City Council’s Building Consultancy for a high standard of work, excellent communication links, and having been constructed and managed with care and attention to the imposed requirements. Craig Holmes said: “DVS played a big part in helping this facility achieve award status, which we are very proud of. We look forward to any future work we may be involved in with The Tamarind Centre and NHS.”

St George’s Hospital Rehabilitation Unit, Lincoln Another large mental health sector contract for DVS saw it supply the St George’s Hospital rehabilitation unit in Lincoln, Discovery House, which opened in February 2012. The multi- million pound facility provides inpatient rehabilitation for those suffering from long-term mental health issues in a therapeutic environment. The unit replaced two existing inpatient wards, and saw an additional ‘female only’ ward created.

With security and hygiene key, DVS supplied

products to furnish the unit with secure washroom facilities. In all, 66 automatic flushvalves were fitted, along with 56 Aquarius automatic taps, and stainless steel ligature- resistant showerheads. The project was procured through ProCure21, with the facility designed by Gilling Dod Architects.

Clock View Hospital, Liverpool Clock View, situated in Walton, Liverpool, which opened its doors in February 2015, replaced the old Walton Hospital which once stood on the site, and provides the city’s new psychiatric intensive care unit for urgent inpatient care. The facility treats local people for a range of mental health issues, providing 80 individual bedrooms, all with en- suite bathrooms across five wards. Designed to improve the patient experience, the building provides a therapeutic environment, combined with patient-centred care, to improve recovery, and reduce lengths of stay. To help meet the required specification, DVS Safe Ensuite Sanitaryware, WC flushing, No- Touch Sensors, control systems, ‘and more’ were chosen for installation. Craig Holmes explained: “These products incorporate strong, safe,

reliable, and water-efficient design features very well suited to mental healthcare environments. Products installed included our Safe Ensuite WC pans, and ‘all-in-one’ moulded mirrors and basins with backplates, as well as washroom control systems, anti-vandal wave-on sensors, standard concealed cisterns, thermostatic mixing valves, and solenoid valves. DVS supplied the order, and contractors on site carried out the installation.”
