Film additives | materials feature

Film focus is on performance

Reviewing the latest developments in additives for applications in film compounds and for use directly on the film line show suppliers are tackling a broad spectrum of issues, including formation of static electricity, fogging, blocking and odour formation when using post-consumer recycled materials. On the environmental side, various types of mineral fillers have been put through their paces while a number of colour masterbatches have been given the green light for use in compostable films. Armostat 2000 CEP (Closed End Pellet) is the latest AkzoNobel innovation in the field of antistatic additives. “It is a new, easy-to-dose physical form of Armostat 2000, an amine-free lauric diethanol amide antistatic additive already well known in the market for fast and long durability in polyolefin applications,” said Elisa Conte, technical development manager for polymer additives at AkzoNobel with responsibility for the EMEIA area.

The CEP granules look like tiny white square pillows.

Each is comprised of a polyethylene or polypropylene film that fully encapsulates the additive. This easy-to- dose form is said to provide very good flow, it is non-dusting and easy to handle. “Armostat 2000 CEP is completely unique on the

market for its appearance and free-flowing properties,” Conte said. The new additive can be stored at a wide range of

temperatures, removing the need for refrigerated transport. Storage at customers’ facilities in warm regions or in summer season is also simplified. “This innovative and easy to dose form of Armostat

2000 overcomes all the issues related to the relatively low melting point of lauric diethanol amide,” Conte said. Adeka has also added a new antistatic agent to its

product portfolio. The company said that ADK Stab AS-301 is a permanent type antistatic (which means that it does not require moisture to be effective) that
