around the halls. A conference on Industry 4.0 – jointly organised with VDMA, the German trade body that represents plastics machinery suppliers – will consider the impact of Industry 4.0 on the sector.

At the same time, ‘Tech Talk’ will

cover a wide range of technical areas, while other events are more focused on narrower themes, such as product design and medical plastics.

Medical focus One exhibitor focused on medical plastics is Davis- Standard – which will exhibit an HPE-H extruder for medical tubing applications at this year’s Chinaplas exhibition. The energy-efficient HPE-H is compact in design,

available for fast delivery and easy to maintain accord- ing to the company. It is available in 20mm (0.75in), 25mm (1in), 30mm (1.25in), 40mm (1.5in) and 45mm (1.75in) sizes, to deliver pocessing versatility. The company sees strong demand in Asia for

feedscrews, control systems and medical tubing technology, as well as for its DSX product line for cast film, blown film and packaging applications. The company’s regional presence has grown since it opened Davis-Standard (Suzhou) Plastics Packaging Machinery in 2012. This facility is the company’s manufacturing base in China and houses an R&D laboratory for process development and trials. “We’ve experienced growth across all platforms in China, but the medical tubing sector has been espe- cially strong for us,” said Sekaran Murugaiah, Davis- Standard vice president of business development for Asia. “Customers appreciate our regional presence and the availability of the medical tubing laboratory in Suzhou to test new resins and processes. These R&D capabilities have been key in ensuring customers in the region are equipped to address market demands.” The Suzhou lab features direct drive 19mm and 24mm single screw extruders, each with a polymer melt pump, three-layer spiral flow tubing die, PLC line control with data acquisition, precision vacuum sizing tank for both rigid and flexible products, closed loop ID/ OD control via an ultrasonic gauging system, a servo controlled combination puller/cutting system, and a transport conveyer with single-zone air eject. It also includes a single layer tubing line designed

for the production of FPVC tubing for IV and fluid delivery applications. Products ranging in size from 2mm OD to 8mm OD can be produced with an accuracy of +/- 50 microns at line speeds up to 100m/minute. The company’s US facility in Pawcatuck, Connecticut, also

has a fully equipped medical tubing laboratory. Both labs support applications for Alternate

Polymer, microbore tubing, multi-lumen and catheter tubing, edotracheal and tracheotomy tubing, radio opaque tubing, bubble tube, taper tube, pipette tubing and multi-layer tubing, among others. Complete medical tubing systems support extruder outputs up to 315kg/hr (700 lbs/hour) and line speeds up to 240m/min (800 feet/min) for materials including PLA, PLLA, Peek, FPVC, polyurethane, nylon, Pebax and FEP. Extruder options are available depending on process and application and engineered for a fast delivery and competitive pricing.

Pipe production and control At this year’s show, Battenfeld-Cincinnati China will present extrusion equipment to save energy and material in pipe production – as well as showcasing its BCtouch UX in China for the first time. “We have grown from a supplier for the local Chinese

market to a company with export rates of around 30% per year,” said Toni Bernards, CEO of Battenfeld-Cincin- nati China. “In 2016, our order intake increased by 35% compared to 2015. For 2017, we have several large new orders, particularly for polyolefin pipe equipment.” In this category, the company will show a SolEx

60-40-C extruder for high-performance PO pipe production. These extruders offer 15-25% energy savings compared to conventional extruders, says the company, and are ideal for large diameter pipe extrusion thanks to their high melt homogeneity and low melt temperature. These reduce sagging, which helps to save material – a large cost factor in pipe production. The company recently sold a pipe line for diameters up to 2.6m to South Korea, as well as supplying a 2.5m line to an Indian customer.
