Akcros Chemicals has two primary manufacturing sites in Eccles in theUK and New Brunswick in the US, with additional production capability at Mumbai in India and Guangzhou in China. Valtris says the acquisition of Akcros will provide additional manufacturing capabili- ties, increased product breadth and a global presence, helping it expand into a leading global player in the polymer additives industry. infrared region (significant for military applications). Uvita SME 3811 has can be used in film, fibre or moulding applications, the company says, with no antagonisms or interactions found in condensation polymers such as thermoplastic PET or PC. Webster says a novelty of the additive is its synergisms – it shows initial increases in absorbance with hindered amines and displays hyperchromicity with organic UV absorbers – while in-situ consumption on exposure is slowed down. “In 20-25 mm injection moulded polypropylene, 0.50% of Uvita SME 3811-1 has zero transmission from 280-440nm and 8% transmission at 450nm. In fibres the material filters out 100% of harmful destructive radiation, protecting sensitive PUR foam backing. In films for packaging it is well known that rancidity of 97% of all globally used oils are sensitive to wave- lengths of 420-440nm. Protection at this wavelength, even in one mil films, is not feasible with current UVA technology. This is no longer an issue. One mil films now have the ability to be processed at higher tempera- ture to achieve thinner films, while taking advantage of a technology that has no volatility limitations and provides permanent UV performance for the life of the film,” Webster says. “The material has no antagonisms and more synergisms with other stabilisers in the polymer system. It is approved in China and Latin America and is currently under test evaluations at major customers in the United States.”
Business developments On the business front, stabiliser manufacturer Akcros Chemicals has recently been acquired by Valtris Specialty Chemicals – a portfolio company of private equity investment firm HIG Capital. Valtris is a manu- facturer of speciality chemicals primarily used as additives in the production and processing of polymers, sealants, and chemical intermediates and was carved- out of Ferro Corporation by HIG in December 2014.

calcium-based stabilisers and launching production of metal soaps in China. In China, the replacement of lead-based stabilisers by calcium-based alternatives is expected to gain momentum in 2016/2017, particularly for rigid PVC applications. In addition to the move away from lead, fittings stabilised with methyl tin face scrutiny due to water quality concerns and, consequent- ly, replacement by calcium-based stabilisers is expected here as well. Baerlocher commenced production of calcium-based stabilisers at its Chang- zhou plant in 2012. This year, a further investment of $5m will take the total investment to date to $25m and will increase its capacity for non-dusting, calcium- based stabilisers. European distributor Velox has added heat stabilis-
ers from OKA-Tec to its portfolio and will distribute the products in Turkey, Spain, Portugal and Israel. OKA-Tec manufactures antioxidants and stabilisers for PA and PP for automotive under-the-hood applications and electrical and electronics (E&E). The Okabest and Okaflex ranges are claimed to offer better performance than conventional AO1098 and standard stabilisers. The companies say they can solve problems in copper-con- taining heat stabilisation - such as staining - and heavy metal issues across a wide range of polyamide applica- tions. The Okabest thermal stabilisers and metal deactivators for polyolefin compounds are claimed to offer better performance than traditional B-Blends and standard antioxidants regarding long-term stability, emission values and surface finish.
