news Changing gears with polyketones
The German compounder Akro-Plastic is supplying aliphatic polyketone com- pounds to Zipperle Antrieb- stechnik for the production of wear-resistant bevel and cylindrical gears for machine building and high-precision mechanical applications. Aliphatic polyketones,
which were originally manu- factured by Shell for a short period in the 1990s, have recently been relaunched by Hyosung of South Korea. Akro-Plastic is one of several compounders that have started to offer polyketone grades. It said that its Akrotek PK provides outstanding mechani- cal properties, including extremely high abrasion resistance and very good tribological properties
Zipperle is moulding gears using aliphatic polyketone compounds from Akro-Plastic
compared to polyamide (PA) and polyacetal (POM), which are typically used in such applications.
“The particularly favourable
mechanical properties make this new material extremely interesting for our products,” said Hans Zipperle, managing director of Zipperle Antrieb-
stechnik. “Polyketone has become our go-to material for use in the gear sector and provides a superb alternative in our material profile”. The company, which is
based in Renningen, Germany, has carried out extensive testing of gears made from Akrotek PK, which have shown
Plast show switches to 2017
Italy’s leading plastics industry exhibition Plast will next take place in September 2017, breaking its usual three-year interval. The announcement was made at this year’s show, which was held in Milan earlier this month. The next Plast exhibition was originally scheduled for 8-12 May 2018, but it will now
take place in Milan on 26-30 September 2017. It will then resume its three-year interval from those dates. The move is designed to
shift Plast away from what has become a very busy period in the global plastics industry’s triennial exhibition cycle. The original May 2018 dates would have placed the Italian
exhibition close to NPE in the US, PlastIndia in India and Chinaplas in China, which is what happened this year. Plast 2015 also coincided with Brazil’s Feiplastic exhibition, which is on a two-year cycle. Promaplast, which is the
organiser of Plast and is fully owned by the Italian plastics machinery association Assocomaplast, said that the new September 2017 dates will place the Plast show three weeks away from Fakuma, which traditionally takes place in the third week of October. l We will have a special report from Plast 2015 in next month’s Compounding World magazine. ❙
