A ‘SUPREME’ conceptual submarine design system


Commissioned by the Netherlands Defence Materiel Organisation (responsible for MoD procurement) within the scope of the WALRUS replacement programme, MARIN has developed the SUPREME conceptual submarine design application.


SUPREME has been built in MARIN’s QUAESTOR framework using Rhinoceros TM


as the CAD


tool to provide 3D modelling capabilities. Within SUPREME a naval architect can create an accurate 3D representation of a submarine concept and perform all the necessary basic calculations in an efficient way. Any change in input results in recalculation of only the data that directly or indirectly depends on that input.


QUAESTOR flexibility Since most of the software tools for dimensioning submarine systems and components used in SUPREME are confidential, the open architecture of this QUAESTOR application allows the DMO design team to maintain, integrate and update these tools in SUPREME without the involvement of its prime developers.

Rhinoceros integration Considerable effort went into the seamless integration of Rhino and QUAESTOR. This was achieved by implementing a limited number of Rhino functions on solids and surfaces in only three standardised QUAESTOR functions. This implementation allows the designer to make changes in the topology. For example,


moving a submarine bulkhead in SUPREME only requires the destruction and regeneration of the dependent parts of the geometry instead of recreating the complete geometrical model. The visibility of the Rhino objects is controlled by SUPREME and enables flexible and intuitive browsing in the submarine geometry.


Accurate 3D compartment configuration SUPREME includes accurate 3D geometric representation of all compartments and their dividing surfaces. This makes it is possible to accurately perform the weight and volume balance at an early design stage, which is paramount in submarine design.


Hydrodynamic tool integration SUPREME automates data exchange between all analysis programs and therefore reduces time-to-market for new designs. This enables naval architects to concentrate on analysing different design concepts in an efficient way without the hurdle of having to check the consistency of data when passing it from one application to the other. Although SUPREME is still being developed, DMO has successfully started to use the application within the scope of the WALRUS replacement programme.
