THOUGHTS Big data mean big opportunities
When I made my first steps in the world of pig production, it kind of surprised me that individual finisher pigs are not ‘known’ to producers. Sows – yes – sows form part of farm infrastructure for a longer time. I was told they are worth the investment. Sows get electronic ear tags, so what they eat, how much they eat, who their ancestors are and who their offspring are – all information per ani- mal is available at the click of a mouse.
Grower and finisher pigs, however, I learnt, they come and go. Careful attention of course is neces-
sary, but if information about a certain animal could be traced back to a batch or a farm, I was told, that would be sufficient.
It looks like my initial amazement wasn’t completely weird. With the ongoing development of the web, any data has surfaced to be incredibly valuable. The more we know about performance of animals, the
more we can benchmark, analyse and thus the more room for opportunities are identified. In this issue, the topic comes back in various articles. On page 16, you will be able to read how acquiring data about pig production plays an important role at the Centro Experimental Porcino in Segovia, Spain. Where the use of all kinds of pig data can lead to, is described in an article by Prof Yuzo Koketsu, of Meiji University in Japan, on page 6. Exactly how to acquire data from day-to-day pig production will be highlighted in an upcoming issue. I have no doubt this is just the beginning. Mark my words, at EuroTier ‘Big Data’ will be a buzzword.
