November 2016 Welcome to the latest version of OpenLines

With the launch of our new brand, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, the external face of electricity Transmission and Distribution at SSE plc has undergone a fundamental change since the July edition of OpenLines.

Our new name, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN), sums up what we do in the simplest possible terms by bringing together our businesses in the north of Scotland and central southern England – Scottish Hydro Electric Power Distribution (SHEPD), Southern Electric Power Distribution (SEPD) and Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission). It represents every part of our business, north and south, from the engineers building the largest electricity transmission link in the UK, to the teams caring for our customers when we experience bad weather.

While our new brand has been kept firmly under wraps until its external launch at the start of September, our largest project, the subsea HVDC link and associated onshore works between Caithness and Moray is really starting to take shape. The project took a significant step forward at the end of September as the first section of the line was energised. The 275kV overhead line circuit between Knocknagael, south of Inverness, and Kintore, to the north west of Aberdeen, is now live and connected to the UK’s largest substation at Blackhillock, which will link to the 1200MW DC cable from Caithness.

Although the project is not due for completion until 2018, the financial impact of construction is already starting to reap rewards for local communities in the area and the national economies of both Scotland and Great Britain.

A recent study into the economic impact of the project found that it will deliver a £634.5m boost to the UK economy, supporting over 10,000 years of employment in the process.
