Ireland in 2016 is a very different place to 100 years ago. To what extent it would be recognisable to those involved in the events that led to the foundation of our state we cannot know, no more than we can imagine how we will be seen a century hence. However, I hope that our programme for Ireland 2016 offers some insight into our contemporary and historical cultural life and so enriches our understanding of ourselves.
