IOSH 2016 PROGRAMME
UNVEILED The programme for the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health’s, IOSH, annual conference has been revealed.
Delegates at IOSH 2016 will be able to network with internal and external stakeholders to pick up tips on how to integrate safety and health into the fabric of their organisation.
The conference theme is set to be ‘Influential leadership: delivering impact – sustaining change’ and will form the third and final part of a series of IOSH international conferences on the leadership theme.

TIME TO TALK DAY The British Safety Council are supporting the Mind Time to Change campaign, having recently got behind Time to Talk Day, aimed at getting the UK talking about the issue of mental health. The council are now urging its members to do the same.
Neal Stone, Policy and Standards Director of the British Safety Council, explained why the British Safety Council is backing the campaign. He commented: “We know that there are major challenges when it comes to mental health and work, and it affects government, businesses and ultimately individuals – without question more needs to be done, and it starts with creating the space to have the conversations. Time to Talk Day was an important campaign to get this conversation going.
“In the UK mental ill-health costs £70 billion per year according to a recent OECD report. This is roughly 4.5% of GDP, in lost productivity at work, benefit payments and health care expenditure. Employers have a role to play in tackling this as better policies and practices in identifying

The conference is to be held at ExCeL London on 21-22 June and will be split into four tracks of sessions, allowing delegates to pick which best suits their needs.
Track A will be ‘How to influence – internally and externally’. Speakers will include Malcolm Staves, Corporate Health and Safety Director of L’Oreal; and Dr Shaun Lundy, Academic Portfolio Leader for the Department of Built Environment at the University of Greenwich.
Track B is titled ‘Business risk and resilience’ and will include presentations from Mary Lawrence, Head of Health and Safety at Osborne Clark; and Magnus Carter, founder of Mentor Ltd.
‘Innovation across programmes, strategy and technology’ will be the title for Track C. Seamus Keogh, Chief Operating Officer at Clancy Docwra; and Paul Williams, Head of Health and Safety at Peabody, will be among speakers.
‘Positioning for the future’ will be the theme of Track D, featuring presentations by Michael Emery, SHE Manager for Secure Health and Safety; and John Green, Director HSE, Laing O’Rourke Europe.
There will also be plenary sessions over the two days, with topics including IOSH’s research projects and the health of the nation.
IOSH president Dr Karen McDonnell said: “I am delighted that several high-profile speakers are already on a programme which will be rich in content.”

“Our video, Mental Health at Work, made with the generous support of Mind and the Centre for Mental Health, identifies the role the workplace can play in managing mental health risks through surveys and training, as well as the importance of spotting the symptoms of mental health problems early. We are making one of our
posters available, free of charge, to promote within businesses. Together, employers and employees, should take time to talk about mental health.”
The Time to Talk Day campaign website contains a range of useful resources, including how the campaign can be adopted in the workplace. Mind and the Centre for Mental Health websites also have resources for businesses to help them build healthy workplaces and give support to people with mental health problems.
