CLEANING & HYGIENE

Turning Cleaning Green in Care Homes

‘Green Cleaning’ is a trend that is fast becoming very popular in the cleaning industry, with the use of ‘Stabilised Aqueous Ozone’ emerging as one of the favourite methods for eco-minded cleaners. Here, Green World Innovations explain how this new system is making a positive impact in the care industry.

The Worldwide Cleaning Industry Association has recently identified that ‘green’ cleaning is one of the top trends for the industry in 2016, with cleaning suppliers reporting that nearly a third of their total sales were ‘green’ cleaning products.

Traditionally, numerous chemicals are used for cleaning different areas throughout care home facilities. These cleaning products are a major cause for concern when it comes to their impact on the environment, not only in the production phase, when a large amount of energy is used to manufacture them, but also the packaging and transportation that is necessary to deliver them.

Toxins in cleaning chemicals can be dangerous to both residents and to cleaning staff regularly using the products, and for elderly residents in a care home these chemical side effects can be particularly damaging.

Over the years, the cleaning industry has responded to the demand for ‘greener’ cleaning alternatives. Common misconceptions that chemicals have to be used in order to achieve high cleaning standards have been proven otherwise and there is now an array of environmentally friendly products to choose from. These include cleaners that have had hazardous chemicals removed, natural cleaning solutions and products that are made using only renewable materials.

One leading, green cleaning solution is Stabilised Aqueous Ozone a sanitiser that is 100% natural and 100% environmentally friendly.

It almost sounds too good to be true but it is quickly being adopted by leading commercial cleaning companies and is being implemented in a wide variety of environments including a number of care home settings.

Stabilised Aqueous Ozone is produced by a machine called the Tersano lotus® PRO which is distributed through Green World Innovations, based in Coventry. The lotus® PRO system is installed onsite and a power and water feed is connected to it. The machine then infuses ordinary tap water with a stabiliser, creating Stabilised Aqueous Ozone that cleaning staff can dispense into spray bottles, buckets or ride-on cleaning machines.

Stabilised Aqueous Ozone can then be used to clean any surface, including floors, in kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms and offices. After four hours, the infused water turns back into ordinary tap water again and can be poured down the drain safely, without contaminating the environment.

One care home company that has made the switch to green cleaning, with impressive results, is Gwalia Care & Support, in South Wales.

Tony Rowland, Facilities Manager at Gwalia Care & Support said: “We have now been using Stabilised Aqueous Ozone for nine months in one of our care homes and we’ve been so impressed with it that it will be fitted as standard in all future homes as well as being retrofitted to our other facilities.

“Cleaning staff currently use Stabilised Aqueous Ozone on all surfaces including floors, walls, touch points, client rooms, laundry rooms, hairdressers and offices. It is a much simpler system for the staff, no COSHH to worry about, no worry that they are using the wrong chemical for a particular task and no hefty cleaning materials bill either. Stabilised Aqueous Ozone definitely cleans as well as chemicals. We have been using ATYP testing to monitor the cleanliness of the home and the results have been excellent.”

By using Stabilised Aqueous Ozone, cleaning costs are reduced as chemicals don’t need to be bought, labour can be used more effectively as it is a more time efficient solution, water consumption is reduced as there is no need to rinse once sanitised and the lotus® PRO requires very little energy in order to work.

The Tersano’s lotus® PRO system ticks a huge number of environmental requirements and certainly seems to be the future of green cleaning.
