advancement. The human impact on marine life can threaten tourism, fisheries, biodiversity, cultural heritage, shoreline protection, human food supply, science, and natural beauty. Even Leonardo DiCaprio is on board; he recently addressed the US State Department to raise the alarm on the largest coral bleaching event ever recorded.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT? Every single one of us benefits from the use of cleaning chemicals and they are so widely used, yet rarely discussed in regards to sustainability and the environment. Once you look at these issues and begin to recognise effective alternatives, there’s really no need to knowingly choose environmentally-harmful consumer goods. Have you ever taken the time to read the label on household products you use each day? Many labels read ‘harmful to aquatic life with long lasting effect’, due to the inclusion of phosphates and phosphonates.

At Delphis Eco we make ecological cleaning products, considering every stage of our supply chain throughout the business. The ‘small details’ aren’t overlooked, for example, our head office in South London is powered by green energy. On a larger scale, we make conscientious choices about what to use (and avoid) in every product.

We were ahead of the curve in producing one of the first triclosan- free hand soaps. The full Delphis Eco range is phosphate and phosphonate free, and is safer to use and transport. Bleach and other

stringent cleaning chemicals can pose a risk to respiratory health and skin, however, Delphis Eco provides safer alternatives, which work and have proven to be beneficial to the health of many professional cleaners who use our products every day.

One of the key practices of Delphis Eco is that all our products are readily biodegradable. This is particularly beneficial in areas with septic tanks, poor sanitation, or for people reusing water in their garden or farm. It also avoids harmful chemicals entering the water supply, reducing the damage to aquatic life, which already suffers a cocktail of human pollution from medicine, hormones and industrial output, as well as traditional cleaning chemicals, which are not always filtered out.

All Delphis Eco cleaning products are made from renewable, plant-based ingredients, are readily biodegradable, and available in concentrate. Ours were the first UK cleaning products to get EU Ecolabel accreditation. All our UK products are manufactured here so there is no shipping long distance. We also manufacture and sell a range of products in South Africa. Reducing the transportation of products goes a long way to reducing its environmental footprint, but we’re not relaxing just yet. Delphis Eco is an innovator at heart, looking to challenge the cleaning industry and open the conversation around sustainability.

Using Delphis Eco products that are available as concentrates reduces the environmental impact of excess plastic bottles, and the carbon footprint of transportation, enabling Rendall & Rittner to reduce its environmental impact in line with its sustainability policy.

Rendall & Rittner then took the bold step of mandating its supply chain to use the ecological products, with one cleaning contractor saving £6,000 a year as a result.

By simply delivering a box of two 5ltr bottles of concentrate, instead of 55 boxes of smaller ready-to- use bottles, the customer saves 332 plastic bottles and cuts out 54 deliveries. This saves carbon, administrative resources, storage space, and costs.

Elsewhere, Delphis Eco established a fantastic programme with schools, called The Eco Turtle, to give children hands-on experience learning about enterprise and sustainability within their community. Delphis Eco provides refill stations and concentrate to selected Eco Schools, so that pupils can offer their local community affordable, environmentally friendly cleaning products. It helps students learn where products come from and end up, engages them with avoiding waste, and encourages them to see sustainability as a core principle of a successful modern enterprise. If kids can grow up to challenge issues of sustainability, and engage constructively, that’s a powerful investment in the future.
