Europe’s best performing companies E
arlier this year Intelligent Insurer spent three months conducting extensive research on the reinsurance industry in an attempt to determine which
companies are regarded as leading their way—by their peers and rivals. The tables displayed here present the highest ranked companies in some
of the core categories that were studied during our analysis of the market, based on the responses of executives responding specifically in relation to the European market. This information provides a useful backdrop to the Baden-Baden
conference as it shows which companies are held in high regard in this market. Here, we have revealed the winners of each category. Most shortlists, however, were much longer and comprised up to 10 companies. To see which companies

shortlists
We reveal the European results and analyse the findings of Intelligent Insurer’s annual Global Reinsurance Survey and Awards.
and how they fared, see the October issue of Intelligent Insurer or visit:
www.intelligentinsurer.com Looking at the data that relates to the larger reinsurance companies with
gross written premiums (GWP) of more than $2 billion, Swiss Re clearly swept the board, claiming top spot in all four categories. Although not shown here, one of the interesting findings in the full tables was that the newly formed XL Catlin had broken into the top three in certain categories. Looking at the smaller reinsurers with GWP of less than $2 billion, QBE
Re dominated, winning three of the categories, while CCR claimed top spot in the category relating to claims payments, which is perhaps unsurprising given it is backed by the French government. Turning to the brokers things were a little more mixed. Looking at those
companies with more than $1 billion in revenues, Guy Carpenter came first in the client service category while Aon Benfield topped the other two categories. Similarly there was something of a battle between Matrix Brokers and
JLT Re in the list of brokers with less than $1 billion in revenues. In the three categories mentioned above JLT Re came first twice (client service and expertise and market knowledge) while Matrix came first once (innovation and ability to create new solutions). n
