Product update The case for the meeting room projector

The corporate meeting room market is now dominated by flat screens, but there are still opportunities for projectors. Requirements for dis- plays greater than 96 inches diagonal, bezel-free images and life-size AR / VR content are just a few of the examples where projection makes sense.

For a while, lamp-free pro- jection looked like being the saviour of projector in meet- ing room applications and, to an extent, it still is but almost no one could anticipate the advances in flat screens and video walls. Nonetheless, at the extremes of image size and seamless image quality, projec- tors can still hold sway. Wolfgang Haunschild, Prod- uct Marketing Manager for NEC Display Solutions Europe, rep- resents a product portfolio that features just about every fla- vour of meeting room display, and can therefore assess each technology dispassionately. He says:

“For larger rooms requiring image sizes of >98”, projection offers

a more cost-effective

means of achieving this. Vid- eo walls become costly where projection can deliver the im- age size needed yet without the interruption of bezels. Projec- tion is ideal for meeting rooms which are flexible in size requir- ing different screen sizes. With lens memory function, NEC PA and PX series projectors enable the projected screen size to be selected according to the room size.”

“Larger auditoria can be ad- dressed

with two projectors,

to give all visitors a chance to see the information. Both large projections can show the same content or different content, coming from one PC using the projectors’ HDBaseT-out inter- face to forward the video sig- nal.”

Colour fidelity

Customers with a requirement for sharing 4K content at a large size will probably find projection a viable option, Haunschild again: “Yes, if the size required is beyond the budget needed for a 4K flat panel, then certainly 4K pro- jection would generate a larger image size.” “Often projection screens are bigger in size compared to 98” UHD LFDs; if the audience is sitting close to the projection screen

visualising a Full-HD

resolution, they will see pixels. In 4K/UHD, the projectors can compensate for this effect to generate a pixel-free viewing experience even at closer dis- tances.” “When talking about colour reproduction, a pixel is the smallest size a colour dot that can be visualized. For UHD resolution, 4 individual colour dots take the area of one Full- HD pixel meaning much more accurate colour visualisation can be presented to the audi- ence, providing much higher picture quality.”

Laser prestige

For larger prestige meeting rooms, Haunschild recom- mends the use of a laser pro- jector. He says that NEC’s P502HL-2 is ideal, delivering impressive crisp high bright- ness for detailed content. The P502HL-2 suitable for large meeting rooms and auditoria with a requirement for a screen size of up to 300”. In addition to image size, colour fidelity and quality, users benefit from the integrated NEC MultiPres- enter for wireless presenting functionality (an optional USB WLAN adapter is required for this) and quick connection via 4-digit pin, enabling immedi- ate wireless interaction with the audience. With wide optical zoom, ver- tical/horizontal lens shift and state-of-the-art connectivity options like HDBaseT, the NEC P502HL-2 is said to be world’s most compact 5000 ANSI Lu- men Laser projector. In many installations, it is possible to use existing installation infra- structures, while protecting the customer’s investment for the future. NEC’s PA series also caters for this prestige corporate meeting room segment with two laser models - the world’s first

LCD technology is coupled with the laser light source designed for long lasting operation. What’s more, with a completely sealed optical engine there is no filter needed at all. As a re- sult, service costs are dramati- cally reduced and with no dust to contaminate the LCD panels, you can enjoy consistently bril- liant colour brightness. In addi- tion, the PA series laser projec- tor delivers incredible picture quality, impressive visualisa- tion capabilities and powerful, cost-conscious installation op- portunities.

Where ANSI Lumen <5,000 is adequate, NEC offers the M/ME series, but the ambient light conditions need to be lower to ensure good readabil- ity of content. Comprehensive connectivity and optional Wi-Fi provide the utmost flexibility and time saving operation. The pre-installed MultiPresenter function enables simultaneous wireless presenting and sharing for up to 16 devices when the optional Wi-Fi is chosen. The M/ME and P series projectors are mainly budget driven as they represent a low-cost op- tion compared to large format displays, although the cost of lamp replacement and main- tenance should be factored in.

The laser advantage

Laser technology offers a com- pelling TCO, especially where access for maintenance is an issue. Where there are greater performance demands on the device, for instance in large bright rooms, where detailed content needs to be easily view- able and where usage frequen- cy is high, then laser delivers reliable quality projection. Stretched IT departments need not schedule maintenance,

lamp exchanges or filter clean- ing as it is no longer needed, and these cost savings can be redirected elsewhere.

More and more organisations

are moving to laser to enjoy the cost saving long life perfor- mance benefits. While a TCO case for lamp-based lightsourc- es can be made at the entry-lev-

Meeting room projectors: also on the market

The 5,000 to 6,000 lumen category of meeting room pro- jector has attracted a good deal of attention of late, with competing products from most of the projection vendors.

Featuring native 4K ul- tra-high-definition and bright- ness of 5,000 lumens, this Casio range-topper is the com- pany’s entry into the high-res- olution, high-brightness busi- ness projector category - a market which is expected to grow rapidly by 2020. In recent years, 4K technol- ogy has become increasingly popular for many kinds of dig- ital devices, particularly per- sonal computers. Along with this improvement in video im- age quality, the market share of high-res- o lut i on models for busi- ness use, in- cluding those with 1080p and 4K specifi- cations, is fore- cast to

grow from the current level of under 10 percent to about 30 percent by 2020.
