TIN MINING

COMEBACK? Explorations to take place

By KERENZA MOORE

CORNISH tin min- ing could be set for a revival says the company hoping to reopen a mine in South East

Cornwall. The Redmoor Mine at

Kelly Bray, near Call- ington, contains some of the richest tin resources in the world, according to director of Cornwall Resources Peter Wale.

The area was last mined in 1930.

‘The high-grade tin veins at Redmoor are in the top five globally,’ said a com- pany spokesperson.

Jobs

‘Together with Strongbow, at South Crofty (Camborne), Cornwall Resources are look- ing to revive tin mining in Cornwall.’ A programme of drilling of

23 holes at a depth of around 300m to extract cores is set to start in the spring at Red- moor. If the project then proceeds to an underground mine, Mr

Wale anticipates it could cre- ate several hundred jobs as well as significant investment into the area. Cornwall Resources, a joint

venture between UK and Aus- tralian mining companies, has appointed mining expert Jeff Harrison, of Saltash, to li- aise with local people.

Concerns The first of a series of

planned public meetings about the scheme was held last week and was attended by 32 people. Callington Portreeve Mark

Smith, who lives at Kelly Bray, said he was pleased to

be working closely with the company to keep people in- formed.

‘I attended the first meeting

last Thursday and I felt it was good that the public could ask any questions.’ Cornwall and Callington

Town Councillor Andrew Long said: ‘This proposal could have a positive jobs im- pact on our community but there are naturally concerns from residents as to how any future works might affect their lives. ‘It was good to see the com-

pany taking the lead on con- sultation and involving Coun- cillor Smith from the start.’

A SPECIAL silver key from Looe’s past has been returned to the town. See page 4
