Quality improvement in air cargo comes down to two factors, writes Ariaen Zimmerman, executive director of the Cargo iQ airfreight programme. There needs to be a shift in focus from mere speed to reliability together with cost avoidance. From Cargo iQ data, we now
know that we have improved from a perceived
time of seven days to only 5.4 days, without anybody in the industry noticing. Moreover, only two of the
5.4 days of air cargo’s average journey time are under carrier control. The rest of the time is used to create more value for the shipper, for instance through consolidation or pre- and post-flight
solutions. What is lacking is not
speed, but reliability. From our conversations with
commercial teams within our the journey membership we learn that
speed is often not the number one priority of our customers – shippers or forwarders - who increasingly value visibility and quality. At Cargo iQ we enable this by harnessing the
power
of data, giving airlines, forwarders, handlers, and airports the information and visibility they need to identify opportunities for shipment control and process improvement, offering a more reliable service. I’ve spoken before about
storage
introducing more varied products to the air cargo market, offering different levels of reliability. I believe this will help us to demonstrate the quality that air cargo brings to the supply chain, and show our customers what they are paying for. This is exactly what our community and its technology have to offer.
Descartes demonstrates efficiency gains
Descartes Systems Group will showcase its suite of transport management solutions at Multimodal this year. In
an increasingly inter-
connected, regulated and yet uncertain world, transport operators and their customers face mounting pressure to ensure efficient fleet management with route optimisation, compliance and just-in-time supply chain operations. Coupled with the omnipresent security threat and increasing congestion, achieving complete visibility and a ‘control tower’ to optimise assets in real time is more important than ever. Paperless collaboration
between carriers, transport operators and customers is critical to achieving such seamless and secure operations. Transport Operators attending stand 8040 of Multimodal 2017 can view the full range of Descartes transport management solutions for the job These include: -Dock appointment
scheduling – a collaborative, community-based solution that enables shippers, carriers and consignees to schedule dock door appointments. It streamlines the dock appointment process by distributing the responsibility for scheduling warehouse deliveries or pick-ups to carriers and suppliers. By ensuring all supply chain partners are involved in the process and have visibility into requested, scheduled and rescheduled dock appointments, this solution optimises receiving operations for inbound shipments, helps coordinate outbound pick- ups and ensures appropriate security measures are accounted for. -Electronic document
management and customs filing – including air, ocean, ground, customs, and commercial documents such as advance shipping notices, booking requests and confirmations, cargo status updates, tracking requests, freight invoices, bills of lading,
originating and derived purchase orders, and invoices. -Route planning and
optimisation - advanced route optimisation across a wide variety of planning scenarios

7 Less haste, more reliability, fewer costs Let’s now talk about cost
avoidance. Lack of control is a consistent factor in driving up costs - for instance, if a shipment is supposed to be somewhere and it doesn’t show up, without any preceding information, it triggers a lot of corrective actions with huge costs in man power as well as damage to the customer relationship. For decades, our industry has made many efforts to reduce costs by reducing supplier rates but I believe there are very few further opportunities here. Now we need to focus on cost avoidance. All those processes that cost us a lot of money when they go wrong are what we should improve. To fix those problems we
need to have true insight into our processes. In that regard I believe that our new self- service data portal is the most
from territories and master routes through to extremely dynamic routing environments driven by real-time demand. Head of marketing, Descartes
Systems UK, Andrew Tavener, says: “Doing more with less is fast becoming a mantra – but given the efficiencies that most organisations have
appropriate, or even the only tool available. It provides clear insight into every process, contrasting it with our community’s performance as well as guidance on market needs with standard benchmarks. This is an exciting time,
in which we are looking forward to not only working closely as a community and introducing better visibility on performance, but also working with our first external auditors (Swiss-based SGS) as they will review and implement our independent audit project. A the recent World Cargo
Symposium in Abu Dhabi, IATA’s director general and CEO Alexandre de Juniac called on any of his carrier members that
have not
yet joined Cargo iQ, to do so quickly. He said: “Our customers demand that we do better on quality.”
already attained, transport operators are left questioning where the additional performance can be found. The answer is in embracing a more collaborative approach to decrease costs, improve service, increase productivity, and ensure security and compliance.”
