New penalties for rogue landlords


THE GOVERNMENT have recently confirmed that new measures to crack down on rogue landlords will come into force on the 6th April 2017. The new measures include powers to prosecute and impose significant fines or issue civil notices with penalties of up to £30,000. Andrew Luxton MRICS FARLA, Partner in charge of Stags Residential Lettings Department confirms that whilst measures should be welcomed to help exclude rogue landlords from the private rented sector and generally improve the standard of private rented accommodation, the responsibility to enforce this falls upon local authorities who are often struggling to find the adequate resources. However, one positive is that the income raised from these penalties will be ring fenced for further enforcement activity.
