Surgery told to clean up

AGPsurgery in Maidstone has been prescribed a course of action to im- prove cleanliness and standards by a healthwatchdog. Following a visit to Dr Gopal Sinha’s Grove Park Surgery, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) rated the practice overall as “requir- ing improvement”. The inspector said that while the premiseswere generally clean, there were rust marks on the floor and dust in a nurse’s room. Cleanliness needed to be improved, said the CQCinspector, and infection control auditswere not carried out annually. The infection control lead had also not attended the relevant training. The CQC report conceded that

while risks to patients were gener- allywell-managed, the risks relating to staff working alonewere not, nor were recruitment checks on locums. The inspector also advised that

more needed to be done to improve outcomes for diabetics, who were recording higher glucose readings than elsewhere in the country. Ap- propriate records of all prescriptions and those on high risk medicines were also needed. The practice, rated as good for ef-

fective, caring and responsive serv- ices, was advised to continue its work to improve the low satisfaction scores from patients.

Campaigner’s tribute to former land girl Edna

STUARTOlsson, whocampaigned for recognition for the Women’s Land Army, has paid tribute to Edna Tree, a member for six years, who died recently. Retired civil servant Mr Olsson

and his wife,Anne, helped to organ- ise the Women’s Land Army and Timber CorpsVeterans’ annual serv- ice at the London Cenotaph until it was reluctantly decided to discon- tinue them a few years ago, owing to the age and fragility of the ladies. Mr Olsson’s campaign resulted in

veterans receiving badges of honour in recognition of their WWII work. He said he first met Mrs Tree in

1996 when he started to help with the service at the Cenotaph and had gone to her funeral. Mrs Tree (94), of Maidstone, had

been posted to a farm at East Far- leigh during the war. Her uniform hat was placed with flowers from theWLAat her funeral. Mr Olsson, of Larkfield, said: “On

the passing of another dear lady, Edna Tree,we must remind all pres- ent that the nation owes them a

Edna Tree, and her hat laid in tribute

tremendous debt of gratitude for the work they carried out on the land and in the forests. “Thesewere vital roles and it is re- grettable that it took the nation so long to recognise their work, but I am pleased that Ednawas still alive in 2008 to receive her badge. In a letter similar to those he sends

to bereaved families after the pass- ing of aWLA/TCVveteran, he high- lighted “the great role that over 80,000 girls, including Edna, played during WorldWar II, and I ampar- ticularly relieved that 34,000 were

still alive to receive their badges.” He said Edna would not be for-

gotten, adding: “It has beenmypriv- ilege to get to know many of these fine ladies over the years. I have very fond memories of Edna and her sto- ries of her time in the Women’s Land Army.” Mr Olsson has been researching

the exploits of theWLA,and has un- covered details of unsungwar hero- ines who lost their lives either from enemy action or accidents.  Mrs Tree is remembered in the Downs Mail Obituaries on page 34
