Cornish Times, Friday, March 17, 2017 TIMESProperty 50 lots of Silver will be highlight of auction

INCLUDED in the Antique and Collecta- bles Auction at Shobrook Auctions Ltd. on Wednesday 22nd March at 1-30 is a wide variety of early documentation, some mili- tary and others more informative.

A Discharge Notice from the 11th Regi- ment of Light Dragoons dated 1838 is made more interesting by the fact it is signed by Lord Cardigan who led the charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava. Al- though one can not decipher everything, the gentleman, Richard B. was born in the Parish of St Margaret in Middlesex and was enlisted at Westminster on 19th November 1816. He served in France and was dis-

charged on 31st July 1838 “Being unfit for further service”.

Several documents relate to Guernsey

1820 onwards including the Guernsey Re- gatta poster on Wednesday July 22 1864. The first prize was a silver trophy to the value of 16 Guineas (or the amount in money as an alternative). An early Guernsey map of 1832 is also included.

From another house clearance a large amount of old coinage and small medal col- lection was found. The value of the old half crowns and florins has increased recently due to the scrap value of silver.

Over 50 lots of English and American sil- ver will be the highlight of the auction from more than one property. This includes sev- eral pieces of Georgian silver including a presentation 1855 tankard with lid with ear- lier assay marks and boxed set of 4 serving Apostle spoons with gilded decoration.

A 22” sculpture reproduced by Copeland called Beatrice was originally made by Ed- ward George Papworth Junior (active 1848- 1911). Edward Papworth started his career working in his father’s studio and exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1852 – 1882 and was well received.

Art is also represented with the local artist William Henry Pike (1846 – 1908) showing an oil painting depicting a Mission-

Spring flowers blooming in Lilliput Lane

THERE is an interesting 90-lot coin collection with the George III crown in VF condition, one of the most attractive items and an 1844 quarter farthing, the smallest denomination.

Bargains to be had in competitive antiques market

CLARKS of Liskeard have a General sale this coming Monday. Whilst these type of sales are not as "pretty" as the special- ist Antique or Collec- tive sales they do form an important part of the function of all working salerooms as not all vendors chat- tels via probate are glittering gems.

Many buyers do like General sales though as these this type of auction can provide them with the increas- ingly rare chance of a bargain in very com- petitive antiques mar- ket.

There are numerous boxes of miscellany & sundry lots which have appeal for car boot fans & smaller dealers as well as a de- cent selection of home furnishings for private buyers. An an- tique oak farmhouse table asks a mere £30- 40 & a elm topped nest of tables a similar price. There are some retro pieces too & a retro teak nest with a similar cupboard ask just £30-40.

White goods make

an appearance, ideal for those on low bud- gets & there to be sold whilst a decent quality, hardly used sofa is up for sale, again with no reserve. A small antique pine cottage dresser is in at £90-110. A pair of very large Victorian lamps ask £100-150 & the same is asked each on two good qual- ity pink granite gar- den seats.

A large Chinese porcelain blue & white stick stand is in to go at just £10-20 & a rus- tic court cupboard with horse & fox han- dles asks £60-80. A sil- ver plated Edwardian wedding cake stand is a rare find & asks £100-120, which may appeal to wedding planners this spring. There is a large se- lection of china lots. There are several lots of Royal Albert but its their popular Country Roses service that stands out & ought to make £80-100 while a Troika vase is in at £50-60. A Spode boxed coffee can & saucer set is no money at £20-30 & fireside Beswick Old

English Sheepdog asks £40-50.

A silver sugar sifter just has to sell at only £30-40 & similar can be said for a pair of deco- rative silver cruets at £20-30. A decent sized silver shell dish is also in to go at just £30-40 & these items are among nu- merous entries for the "smalls" buyers. For the china collector, there are 9 Lilliput Lane cottages with their original boxes, with attrac- tive spring flowers in bloom. The Royal Worcester Moments is part

of the Friendship series and the Delphine Deco morning set has attractive triangular features as well as a musical score, with flo- ral decoration.

There is also a comprehensive collection of useful tools.
