Work starts at St Georges Bristol

Construction work is starting on a £6m project to transform St George’s Bristol into a world-class concert venue. The independent music and

spoken word venue, just off Park Street, is working with south-west based construction firm Midas Group to deliver the project. St George’s will re-launch in

spring 2018, with a stunning new pavilion-style extension. The registered charity has

received funding from Arts Council England, Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), Bristol City Council, charitable trusts, corporates, major donors and crowdfund supporters. St George’s has just £240,000 still to raise. The extension, designed by

award-winning architects Patel Taylor, will feature multi-purpose performance spaces, education workshops and venue hire, a café bar and improved access for people with disabilities. Derek Quinn, executive director

at Midas Construction, said: “We are really excited to be working on this wonderfully designed project. We are committed to employing locally wherever possible and look forward to creating a lasting legacy for St George’s and future generations.”

Quality accommodation

Works are in full swing to transform three Grade II listed properties on Bristol’s historic Charlotte Street into stylish student homes. Charlotte’s Rise, as the accommodation will be

known, will include 24 studio, one-bed and two-bed boutique apartments, each designed and finished to an exceptionally high standard. They will be furnished with premium touches such as flat-screen TVs, dishwashers, en-suite showers and ultra-fast internet connections. Students renting an apartment at Charlotte’s Rise,

which is based just off bustling Park Street, will also benefit from an on-site gym. Urban Creation, the Bristol-based developer behind

the scheme, bought the buildings from QualitySolicitors Burroughs Day last year in a deal

worth around £2m. The firm, which had used the buildings as offices for the past 70 years, has moved to Queen Square House. The apartments, which will be larger in size that

those typically rented by students, are expected to be ready for occupation in September 2017. Jonathan Brecknell, director of Urban Creation, said:

“We are excited that works are now steaming ahead to return these historic buildings to their original use as homes, not least because this project will offer something really special for students wanting to make the most of life in Bristol.” Urban Creation has a track record of developing

quality student accommodation in Bristol and it has been developing properties in the city for over a decade.
