MUSIC The GCSE Music course follows the Eduqas syllabus.

Music is all round us. It influences our moods, emotions and stimulates our lives. Following this GCSE music course will develop your understanding of how music is created through composition, performance and appraisal.

This is an enjoyable and mostly practical course, suitable for those with an interest in a wide range of music. Having instrumental lessons is helpful, but not essential. If you can play the keyboard or guitar well in lessons, or sing, or make good use of a computer to make music, you will be able to complete the practical element of the course.

The majority of the work is practical and spread throughout the course, rather than having pressure at the end in a final exam. The coursework element of the course is made up of two parts, performing and composing worth 60% of the final grade.

Performance is worth 30% and involves both solo and ensemble (group) performances. These pieces can be on any instrument or voice, and can be from any style of music.

Composition is worth 30% and involves writing two pieces. One is a free choice and the other is based on starting points given by the exam board. You will be helped to make use of technology to

complete your musical scores and recordings.

The last 40% is the listening exam completed at the end of the course, where understanding of the main elements of music is tested through a range of questions. It covers pop, classical, and world music; with particular focus on musical elements such as harmony, rhythm, melody and structure.

This course will enable you to develop skills such as:

dedication,

teamwork, analysis, presenting,

performing and problem solving. It links to many different careers and is a great balance of very enjoyable practical and academic learning.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION (OCR J587)

and

skills established in Key Stage 3 physical education.

It offers

exciting opportunities to be involved in a number of different physical activities that promote an active and healthy lifestyle.

appreciate the benefits of keeping

fit and healthy. What is important is that you should have a lively and enquiring mind, an interest in physical education and sport, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively.
